DIALOGUE WITH OUR READERS

Face these horrors with acceptance, equanimity, humor by Herb Ruhs, MD, Sept. 8, 2005 I am not cynical, in fact, in my understanding the word cynicism itself signals a serious misunderstanding of how existence works. In order to be a cynic, it seems to me, one would have to believe that the people that one was questioning the motives of actually KNEW WHAT THEY WERE DOING. My observation is that the vast majority of our, so called, "civilized" people are totally asleep and acting totally from conditioned reactions, including the conditioned approach to them selves that makes them believe that they are actually awake and acting with true agency. This is not an observation of mine. If someone could be said to have has this insight, as if seeing something so plain could need insight, is the Buddha. There is a Buddhist story that I am particularly fond of that has Buddha being confronted by some hostile Brahmins who challenge him to declare that he is God. He replies that he is not God. Then they demand to know if he speaks for God. He says not. Then they demand to know what in fact he is then. He replies "Awake." To my understanding any awake individual (mind you I remain unconvinced of my own quality of awakeness) in these times would have to deal with the horrors that abound. No progress is achieved by lying. I am in a state of constant outrage at the actions of much of my species. My ambition is to face these horrors with acceptance and equanimity. It is a big step that spiritual seekers find daunting, I think. The antidote to bitterness, by the way, seems to be humor. In that vein I will suggest that we start thinking up New Orleans jokes. What is the difference between a "looter" and a desperate individual trying to survive? The former is black and the latter white, of course. As the waters rise, the smart get going, the black get blocked. How many FEMA personnel does it take to change a light bulb? FEMA will get back to you with an answer in week or two if the Governor still insist that it is a real emergency. A woman is seen in New Orleans with a Gucci bag over her shoulder. If she is black she is a looter. If she is white she needs a police escort. Well, it is a start anyway. Herb Ruhs, MD
