My soon to be former home, Mendocino County, produces some very entertaining news, especially considering we have only 80,000 people. Events here tend to be dominated by a mass inward migration of rich folks with questionable associations fleeing the mess they have made of our Northern California urban centers. There goes the neighborhood -- astronomical real estate prices and criminal associations come together as naturally as bread and butter. One is forced to come to the conclusion that natural beauty, of which Mendocino has an over abundance, is certain to attract the wrong sort of neighbors.
My candidate for poster child for these demented denizens is Kenny Rogers, not the singer but, rather, the just deposed Chairman of the Mendocino County Republican Party Central Committee. As you read the

We have been on a national crime binge since our politicians first encouraged the settlement of the west by means of robbery, murder, pillage and ethnic cleansing. It has been a descending spiral of amorality ever since.
This is why we are in the mess we are in today. Look no further.
What we need is a national 12-Step program centered on criminal behavior and co-dependence with criminal behavior.

story (see right ) know that Westport has a total population of 230 and is situated on the most beautiful section of the Northern California coast.
I offer this story not just because of its amusing, if bizarre, content, but also because I think it is emblematic of the larger problem our nation faces. Think about it. Rogers got rich running an "auto detailing shop" staffed with serious felons? I don't think so. The Sopranos is not just a TV show. I suspect, if you live in a desirable location, that were you to go out and turn over a few rocks in your neighborhood you too would find Rogers-like characters.
What is becoming obvious, to me at least, is that our chickens have come home to roost. Generations of allowing organized criminals to rake in the loot has left us a legacy of criminals with the wealth to control all aspects of our society -- water boards, political parties, hospitals, corporations, insurance companies, not to mention the entire legal system.
I don't hold out much hope that justice will be served in Mr. Rogers' case. Friends don't let friends down. As far as one can tell, Mr. Rogers remains a member in good standing of our local Republican Party Central Committee.

From the Mendocino County Independent, April 14, 2006 (sorry, no link)
Local Republican leader faces attempted murder charge
Kenny Rogers, former chair of the Mendocino County Republican Party Central Committee, will face trial for attempted murder and solicitation of murder on April 17 in Ukiah [the county seat]. Rogers, 48, also will be tried on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, cultivation of marijuana and possession of marijuana for sale, Mendocino County Superior Court Judge John Behnke ruled at the conclusion of a preliminary hearing March 23 in Ukiah.
Rogers is accused of offering Richard Dean Peacock of Citrus Heights [a Sacramento suburb] several pounds of pot to shoot Westport County Water District board member Alan Simon. Simon suffered minor injuries when Peacock allegedly fired nine bullets through his front door June 17. Peacock is also scheduled for trial in April on attempted murder and other charges related to the shooting.
Rogers is owner of a Sacramento auto detailing company where Peacock worked. He also was the chairman of the Westport County Water District board until his ouster in 2004.
Rogers reportedly harbored a grudge against Simon, who ran as his replacement on the water board during a bitter recall election. Once Rogers was recalled, Simon and other water board members, who jointly act as the fire district board, fired Rogers from his position as assistant fire chief. They also fired the fire chief.
Peacock, a felon with and extensive criminal history, allegedly went to Simon's Westport home June 17 and fired nine bullets through the door with a .22 caliber Ruger pistol provided by Rogers.
Bullets from the pistol grazed Simon's scalp and arm.
Richard Peacock was arrested the day after the shooting.
Ten days later, Rogers was arrested and search warrants were served on his two Mendocino County properties.
Police found more than 10 firearms at the two locations and 250 marijuana plants ranging in size from several inches to several feet, according to testimony at the hearing. They also reportedly located a pound of dried marijuana and three garbage cans filled with marijuana that had been stripped of buds.
Simon has since resigned his seat on the water board. |

We put off restoring the underpinnings of a just society and the necessary clearing of the wreckage of the past at the cost of grave risk to ourselves and the entire world. By pursing a morally bankrupt national life devoted to accumulating wealth by any means we can get away with, we have brought ourselves and the entire world to the brink of total destruction.
A world where "nice guys finish last" is a world soon finished.
