America needs an intervention

by Cassandra, Unknown News

Aug. 14, 2006

After all the recent hullabaloo regarding Mel Gibson's drunken freak-out, I'm remembering some of the things I learned when I worked with substance abusers. I'm not a proponent of the twelve steps, but there is a lot that I value in the field of recovery, like the idea of the intervention. It sometimes works with people who are too far gone in their addiction to realize that they are damaging their relationships with family and friends, their jobs, and their own health. More often it doesn't work, but what if a group were to stage an intervention for an America that is drunk on power and petroleum?

Maybe the many people who believe everything they see on FOX News are too accustomed to America's former status as 'superpower' to see that we're losing everything. The environment is changing faster than our ability to adapt, the US is widely viewed as an evil aggressor rather than a beacon of freedom, and our national debt is out of control.

Yesterday someone told me that there have always been wars and that his opinion, or anyone's didn't matter. I will gladly allow his opinion to have no further use, but right now the wars are being fought with weapons that can destroy almost everything on the planet. We've gone from fighting with the thighbones of animals we've driven to extinction to weapons that will make us extinct ourselves.

Even if a group of the countries we share the planet with made the US look at what it does, I don't think it would change the direction the country is taking. Barrels of oil consumed could be pointed out like empty bottles and syringes, to stubborn insistence that the US isn't out of control, that it can cut back or stop any time it likes. Acts of aggression would be explained away.

This can't be blamed entirely on having a dry-drunk alcoholic as president, but until 2001 the country was still a functioning addict.
