Most people know evil from goose-bumpy movies like The Exorcist or The Grudge. An unlucky few of us know evil from being the victims of violent crimes. Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Donald Rumsfeld, and George Bush know evil because they live it.
Evil is their character, their motivation, the joy of their

lives. As Bush himself has acknowledged, he simply doesn't understand "human dignity." These are men who have proven their cruelty and eagerness to kill often enough, surely any observer brighter than a burnt-out bulb knows that no evil is beyond them.
That is not meant sarcastically, or as an insult -- it's a serious statement. Dead serious: Can you envision or imagine anything so heinous that they would refuse to do it, on principal?
There are of course things Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, or Bush wouldn't say or do in public or on television, because it would contradict their public relations imagemaking. But there's simply nothing these men wouldn't do, as a matter of conscience, if they thought they could get away with it.
If he thought it would advance his political agenda in the slightest, Karl Rove would crush a kitten as quick as you'd crack an egg. If he could blame it on al Qaeda, Dick Cheney would order special ops to vivisect your mother, yank her heart out, dice it with a cheese grater, sprinkle it on a contaminated spinach salad, and force feed it down your throat with a toilet plunger. Donald Rumsfeld would anally rape your infant daughter with a smile on his face, if he could spin it as an excuse to shorten a press conference.
That's not hyperbole or exaggeration. Based on the public record of things these men have done and ordered done, it's perfectly obvious that nothing is beyond them. They have ordered up a war without any reason, lied about it repeatedly, killed thousands upon thousands and thousands more, and never even vaguely apologized for the lies, let alone the killings. And a few weeks ago, Cheney announced with pride that they'd do it all again, exactly the same. So they'd send your son to die for nothing, not once but twice if they could. Why would you even daydream that such men would hesitate to squish a kitten, kill your mother, or violate your child?
Almost laughably, they claim to be Christians -- followers of Christ -- as they torture multitudes in secret prisons and cover entire nations with depleted uranium (radioactive waste). Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, and Bush would nail Christ to the cross, clamp electrified jumper cables onto His genitals, and cram chemical light sticks up Christ's anus.
Sworn to preserve, protect and defend the US Constitution, they stand instead against every American principle from search warrants to "innocent until proven guilty." They kidnap, imprison, and torture people in secret prisons, and don't bother with habeas corpus. Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, and Bush aren't fighting a war against terror, they're fighting a war of terror by terror for terror.
And it's not just words when they look at the catastrophe of Iraq and say they'd do it all again. They are preparing to do it all again. Iraq, it seems, was never the goal, nor was Afghanistan the goal before Iraq. Now Iran is the new target,

the ultimate enemy that must be taken down. And after Iran has been reduced to bloody rubble, we'll be told that the target was always Syria. And after Syria has been ruined, we'll be told lies about another nation and it too will be demolished, as the drumbeats begin for the nation after that to be toppled.
We'll be told these stories and sold these wars for as long as we're willing to stand for it.
And yet, millions of Americans refuse to worry.
They seem to believe Evil has a line it's unwilling to cross.
Evil, they tell themselves, would never be anything but nice to Americans, and the concentration camps on American soil aren't being constructed, or won't really be concentration camps.
Tyranny, they believe, is only for other nations, and our leaders would never try it at home.
That's something good Christians like Cheney, Rove, Rumsfeld, and Bush would never do.

I can't afford therapy, but boy do I need it. So as an affordable alternative, I pound my anger into a weekly column here.
Fair warning: My parents were repressed -- using any bad words would get my mouth washed out with soap, literally. I still remember the sickly flavor of DoveTM. So as an adult, vulgarity helps with the healing. If naughty language offends you, beat the rush and get offended now.
This page is for my own good, not yours, so you may not like it, but I don't care.

Helen and Harry Highwater have published Unknown News since 1997. We're a married couple sharing a byline à la Lennon and McCartney, and "I" can be either of us, or both of us. If you're consumed by curiosity, it's safe to assume the more boisterous and aggressive bits come from Helen, and anything ladylike or demure is probably Harry's work.
