The coming third front in Bush's war
It would seem that US interests have been quite busy in Iran recently. Bush's speech explicitly stated the following:
The Iranian embassy in North Iraq was taken over by SpcOps recently. Iranian territories bordering S. Iraq have been hit with counter-insurgency tactics recently as well. My thoughts to you, late in 2006, that Bush would "go for broke" following the mid-term elections seem to be proven correct. Given the existing build up of the fleets in the ME, Indian Oceans and off the Coast of the Horn Of Africa, plus the transit of "surge" troops in Iraq before the President even gave his speech, indicates to me that a plan made some time ago is unfolding now. The Democrats in Congress will be hamstrung as they will not cut funding to troops in theatre. It also makes more sense to me now why the US deployed a missile based component in the Gulf waters. Iran and Syria's principle offensive weapons are missiles. You don't deploy patriot defense systems unless you think you will need them. Bush will NOT let go of Iraq . He is taking the fight back to Iran and Syria by first engaging their proxy combatants and logistics, AND if necessary I am sure he will attack the sovereignty of these nations directly. I admit that I did not give much thought to the US build up off the Horn of Africa as I thought the US had been present there for some time to monitor activities. I would not have thought that Bush would have opened a third front in this war. There is nothing more dangerous than a zealot, be they Persian, Arab, Israeli or American Fundamentalist Christian. The US has re-elected a man more dangerous than I had anticipated. The Canadian
Technically true, but not entirely. The embassy is on Kurdish soil, which, at the moment is on quasi-independent soil. The Iraq government has little to no power in the Northern Kurdish lands which used to make up N Iraq. Iran has placed a consulate there, not too far from its own border for this reason. The US has known it has existed for sometime as has the Turks and Israeli's, who also have SpcOps in the area. It is cowboy country. The US had an agreement with the Kurds to let them run their own affairs so long as they keep out of the US'/Iraqi affairs. Much of Iraq's oil fields are in the North in Kurdish lands. The Iranian Republican Guard/Badr Brigade have called this forward intelligence post a consulate, but that has not been its purpose. The Canadian
An international incident? No not yet, "just a shot across the bow". I also wouldn't count on any rebuke concerning international law. Since when has the Bush Presidency given a crap about international law? An international incident? Ha! All of Iraq is an international incident...and it's about to get BIG. No country recognizes Kurdistan, just the oil that exists there. Don't forget, it wasn't until after WW1 that Iraq even existed (thanks to the British). As long as the Kurds don't cause trouble, they can be counted upon to maintain peace and order within their territory. This allows the US to concentrate its troops in Baghdad and the Anbar region. By helping the US, the US keeps the Turks from Massacring the Kurds with who they have been fighting a guerilla war in S Turkey for decades. I once knew this guy named Sadar. He fought with the PKK after surviving the Al-Anfal campaign and, as a former member of the 33 Commando Unit of the Hammurabi Regiment (tank hunter-killers), he personally witnessed Halubja. Saddam sent unknowing units of his army, who were Kurds, to surround the areas to be gassed without equipping them with chemprotection suits. Saddam wanted to get rid of theses units because he did not trust their loyalty following the end of the Iran war. Sadar escaped, joined the PKK and fought the Turks and Iraqis before abandoning this life and arriving in Canada as a refugee. He was 25 when I met him. He had been at war since he was 16. He joined the army with his childhood friend. They fought together for years. His friend died meters from him when an Iranian tank round blew his lower body off. The Canadian
Yeah, I know. Not much to be optimistic about. Its kind of like watching the Spanish Civil War knowing WW2 is around the corner and yet everyone just goes on about their lives as if nothing is about to happen. Percy Bysshe Shelley's 1818 sonnet, "Ozymandias": The Canadian
