That election that was supposed to change everything

So far the new Democratic majority in Congress has done
nothing for the people who voted for them.
Raising the minimum wage and
supporting stem cell research is not going to stop Bush's wars in the
Middle East, nor end the present economic policies which have been a
disaster for the American worker.
|
| These are the real issues which a
majority of Americans want their new Congress to deal with, and with the
exception of a toothless resolution against the war in Iraq, nothing has
been done to carry out the wishes of the electorate.
The Democrats are
now the majority in both houses of Congress, and also control the
powerful committees which can cut off funding for Bush's wars. Not only
have the Democrats not done that, they are funding Bush's surge,
escalating the conflict.
Also, the Democrats have been very quiet about
Bush's threats to attack Iran, which, if allowed to happen, will end any
chance of a withdrawal of American forces from the Middle East quagmire.
In regards to our rapidly failing economy, raising the minimum wage by a
dollar is the equivalent of a drop in a bucket, and will have absolutely
no effect whatsoever.
Despite all the hoopla and high-sounding talk
from the newly elected Congress, it appears that it is going to be
business as usual. It is not the will of the people
which matters, but that of a small body of politicians who represent the
interests of those
|
entities which can pay the most for their favors.
It
is not the dog waving its tail, but the tail waving the dog, and with
nothing more than lip service and a healthy dose of misinfor- mation and
fear-mongering, the American people can be kept safely on their leash,
or so it seems.
As we see, this new Congress ignore the will of
|
the
people. Let us not make the same mistake and play their game in 2008.
The
problem lies with a political system which is broken, riddled with
corruption, and infiltrated by special interests with no allegiance to
America. Electing a different Congress and President every four years
changes nothing -- the system in which they work remains broken.
Real
change will be possible only after people like ourselves, who have had
enough, show our displeasure by no longer playing their game.
Although a
great number of us are no longer participating in this fraud which we
call elections here in America, there are further actions which we as
individuals can take to protest the lack of real representation by the
government in Washington.
An effective yet peaceful means of putting
pressure on the wealthy corporate elite and their political flunkies is
a boycott of their financial markets. Why should we invest our hard-earned dollars into the money funds of those same corporate crooks that
sell our jobs out of the country and bribe our legislators?
The economy,
if left on its present course, is going to collapse regardless. One of
the last props holding it together was a healthy housing market, which
has now fallen on shaky ground. So lackluster has our economy become
that financial analysts are talking about the growing health care
market.
Imagine, this is what the world's largest and most robust economy
has come to -- emptying the bed pans of the baby boomer generation.
We
are going to lose our savings anyway, as the dollar plummets in worth.
Getting out of the Wall Street money game has more advantages than just
striking a blow against the money machines of the wealthy capitalist
bankers -- not having to bear the guilt of knowing your
dollars are helping to finance the so called Global Economy of
sweatshops and child labor in Third World countries.
Washington's
politicians are well aware of the deepening economic mess, because they helped
create it. Even if Congress wanted to act to save the economy, it would
be too little, too late. We must not support a government whose actions
are precipitating the downfall of the people they have sworn to
represent.
Remember, when the crunch comes we the people will be left
holding the bag long after the politicians and the corporate crooks are
gone.
