Paris Hilton: Serious thoughts about the frivolous

by Mr. Chuckles

I have to confess: originally I was greatly amused by Paris Hilton's entanglements with the justice system. Now I am saddened, and somewhat ashamed of my earlier attitudes.

What I see happening today is the psychological deconstruction of an ego, a person's personality and mentality pushed past the breaking point. Whether young Paris will reconstruct herself successfully is an open question. Good hearted people will be wishing her a speedy and complete recovery.

Recovery? It is hard to tell based on news reports but a good guess is that Paris' first few days in jail amounted to an involuntary detoxification. Cold turkey. And she was not ready (who ever is :-) In fact, nothing in her life had prepared her for the harsh reality of

confinement + sensory deprivation + detoxification. To Paris jail was like Abu Ghraib... a den of torture.

I also now believe that her attorney failed to provide worthy service. After her DUI conviction, according to what I have read, she not only continued to drive -- and got stopped two more times -- but also failed to comply with the standard terms for DUI offences, which include enrolling in an Alcohol Education course.

So in effect, she apparently disregarded *everything* from the first DUI sentence, and that is why the judge hammered her with actual jail time instead of community service.

Her attorney ought to have convinced her to go to a 30 day shake-and-bake celebrity rehab clinic before she went to court again for driving with a suspended license. Then the judge would most likely have been lenient -- contrition combined with constructive actions could have salvaged her situation right up to the very end.

Mr. Chuckles

Yeah, I get so weary of phony news starring phony newsmakers, and I've never really understood why anyone who wants to be informed about current events is instead forced to know who Paris Hilton is. She simply has no relevance to any aspect of anything that matters to me.

And yet, unavoidably, I know twenty times as much about Paris Hilton as I know about almost anyone in Congress or the Cabinet, or the corporations that own them.

The system that allows Paris Hilton to live such a sheltered, plush, luxurious life solely as a result of her heredity is, of course, absurd. She's a walking talking clubbing and shopping embodiment of everything that's wrong with American media and American culture.

I've got some sympathy for her, like you do. Her bubbleheaded existence is not her fault. Arguably, some jail time might be what Ms Hilton needs, but nobody who hasn't killed anyone deserves this level of hounding and humiliation.

And just like you and I gain nothing from her pointless fame, the public gains nothing but distraction from what amounts to her public shaming, the wall-to-wall coverage of all this.

My impression is that there's a concerted effort to keep people distracted from the news that matters. Great pains have been taken over the past few years to make this seemingly shallow but essentially innocuous Paris person into a "personality"... It's all artificial, as "real" as a reality show -- except, of course, to the well-pampered victim. And now the next step of the circus is to see whether she can be pressured into further humiliating herself or, perhaps, into killing herself, so the next generation can have their Marilyn.
