Dialogue: Letters to the editor

The quiet Colin Powell

The other day i happened to be watching a television interview of Colin Powell and his wife on one of these news/talk shows, i forget which one it was. Anyway they touched on his experience in viet nam, and mentioned that he never was a political person, and he never desired to run for a political office, yah duh, yah duh.

I also remember there was an article in a news show how this Obama whatshisname had 'conferred' with Colin Powell (something like baby kissing, hot dog eating, anything to get your mug on the front page of a paper thing).

Here's the thing. Colin Powell KNEW that Bush was doing wrong on Iraq and Afghanistan from the get-go. He got really fucking quiet after awhile, stayed out of the country, stayed away from the newshounds except when making the usual "official" pronouncements, and then quietly said he was going to quit the job, quietly. No really good reasons, just going to quit.

This fucker might have made a difference if
The word that comes to mind when I think of Colin Powell is "coward." Not in the usual, schoolyard taunt sense of the word, but in its most literal, meaningful sense.

He's a man who was presented with a crystal-clear, life-and-death, fully-informed choice between Right and Wrong, and he chose to side with Wrong, to knowingly speak lies in favor of Wrong. Hundreds of thousands are dead as a virtually direct result of his actions, and he's inexplicably still seen as a statesman, a respected voice, a man to be respected.  He's not.  He's scum.

And I'll mention in passing, since it seems to still be "unknown news" to many people, that as a young officer Powell was assigned to investigate allegations of war crimes in Vietnam. And he essentially found none. The My Lai massacre and other ugly matters only came out after Powell's 'investigation' was finished.

Did I mention? He's scum.

Helen & Harry
he would have had the guts to tell the truth.
But he did not. I guess he never really did care about the troops under his command, it was just lucky he didn't kill that many when he ordered them around.

So in my book he isn't really worth listening to.

When we publish incoming emails, we usually edit out the sender's last name, email address, or anything else that would tend to uniquely identify the author (if we slip up, please let us know). But if your email is unambiguously intended only to annoy, insult, or threaten us, we'll publish all the details, and leave it on-line forever.

We're especially interested in hearing and considering different perspectives. All we ask is that you conduct yourself sanely and civilly. For the most productive dialogue, it helps if you'll cite a specific article or concept we've gotten wrong.

Please don't send attachments or other cr*p we don't want.

If you're trying to reach us but getting no reply, it's probably because you've sent us cr*p we don't want, so we're filtering your emails into the trash, unopened and unread.
