They tell you that certain emotions are "bad".
Hate is "bad," but not shame.
Anger is "bad," but not tolerance.
Depression is "bad," but not humility.
Of course, if you have any of these emotions then you are bad, so you've got to find a way to un-feel them.... and if we ever catch you weeping, everyone around you will drop whatever they are doing and stare urgently at you while holding you down until you stop weeping. "Here is a pill. Should help you with your unusual weeping problem. Healthy citizens do not feel the desire to weep."
But don't they hate hate?
Aren't they angry with those who are not tolerant?
Isn't anyone around here depressed because they have been given so many, many reasons to be humble?
To be sure, we must all control our behavior in the public sphere, but trying to control your emotions is like trying to control what you smell.
It is what's happening to you that is making you feel what you feel, and if you don't act like you feel the way you do, short of violence, if we all pretend to feel some acceptable neutral way ... we just might wind up in the situation we've wound up in.
Keep on smiling...
