Response to a soldier's mother
That said, however, I feel it necessary to explain to you the difference between people like me appreciating the sacrifices people like you and your family have made, and continue to be willing to make and, people like Bush & Co appreciating and exploiting that willingness. When all of this nonsense started, I came across people like you (who seemed confused about the whole support Bush/Iraq Nowadays, I'm glad to say, I get to use it less and less and, to be honest, I hope you're the last to need it because, frankly, even I'm becoming bored with posting it (I've adapted it especially for you, with the intention that, after reading it, you personally will no longer harbor any misgivings or misunderstandings about people like me). I've come to the conclusion that, if you (and the minority still like thinking like you reading it) don't understand non-partisan opponents of BushCo like me by now, particularly after reading this, then I will just have to accept you are a lost cause So: Why do you jump to conclusions about anyone who says anything derogatory whatsoever about your precious, apparently totally infallible, party? Can they do nothing wrong in your eyes? Are you that smitten by them that you are completely oblivious to any wrongdoing by them whatsoever? How can that be? Throughout history, no political party has ever been utterly flawless before, so what makes you believe BushCo is now? You're like a doting mother who, despite the overwhelming evidence against him, proclaims unconditional faith in their kid who was just accused massacring his entire family, pets, neighborhood ... in fact, everyone except her. I just don't get it. And I get sick and tired of reading unfounded diatribes like this that imply a) that anyone who makes a derogatory comment about this bunch must be leftwing, "hate filled mockers" ... with an ulterior motive; and, b) that they are basing their opinion on little or no evidence. Get real. None of us who oppose this administration do that. I certainly haven't. Is it completely inconceivable to you that some of us who oppose your precious current (note that word, it's central to what I'm saying and will prevent you from making the same deluded blunder in the future) administration may have no particular political allegiance to any US party whatsoever, and we just want what we always want: for those who end up in charge of our respective countries (remember I'm from the UK) to behave in a decent, scrupulous, ethical and humane manner and, to work for the betterment of all of us, not just themselves? Is that too demanding a concept for you to comprehend? Whether or not some of the ever-lengthening list of unfavorable accusations that have been hurled at this administration So: what's keeping you loyal to these thugs? What, among the many negative claims to have been made about them, have they done that doesn't matter? What among these claims will be acceptable to you, and cause you least remorse, when the • Their involvement with the PNAC who, years before • The lies about Iraq and WMD (i.e. Hussein having them and being able to launch them within 45 minutes ... ) that further enabled those plans, and took us to a needless war which, not only overthrew a regime who, although bad, were of no threat whatsoever to us, but which also has killed, and is still killing, thousands of innocent people? • The millions • Or will it be: the lack of body armor/weaponry for the troops in a war situation (is your son fully protected? Some mother's son's aren't) • the secret rendition flights • the prolonged imprisonment and torture (and probably death) of potentially innocent people • the secret spying on - also potentially innocent US citizens (maybe even you) • the gross negligence for your constitution and the erosion of the civil rights and liberties of the American people (e.g. by stifling dissent and undermining opposition) • the plans to attack further nations, such as Iran • the catalogue of failures in New Orleans after Katrina • the unchallenged emergence of extreme Christian ideologies in your schools • the effects of depleted uranium for years to come on your troops, their offspring and others, and their offspring • the questionable elections • the continued, neglected, suffering/deaths of workers from the aftermath of • the demands on public servants and services (such as librarians) to share private information about your activities • that they controlled the mass media and used it to their own ends • that they pre-empted prosecution and used signing statements and vetoes to secretly claim more and more authority and, on the way, absolved themselves of any wrongdoing they may be accused of in the future • or that they shared secrets about people they didn't much like and ruined their careers ... • Etc, etc, etc (and lots of still-to-emerge etc's) What will it take to finally get you pissed? Or will you still refuse to believe any of it? I despair of all those who are still, after all that's happened, loyal to this incarnation of the Republican Party and are willing to yield to or overlook everything they do: What are you thinking? Are you thinking? Or are you letting the party do the thinking for you? As a non-partisan observer (honest): You are defending something that is pretending to be something else Being from the UK, I'm relatively new to American politics (and hope, soon, to be as oblivious to it as I was before this bunch seized power), but, surely Surely not. I won't believe it. For, non partisan as I am, and even if I were You? Yours very sincerely,
