You cannot go against nature

by HappySysiphus, Unknown News      August 18, 2007

Anybody remember that song by Love and Rockets?

          You cannot go against Nature
          Because when you do
          Go against Nature
That's a part of nature too.

I have to yawn at all the hand wrenching and gnashing of teeth because of the way the human race is desecrating and destroying this "Rare Jewel Of the Universe."

I don't deny that it is beautiful. But who told you it was rare?

I remember they used to say that our sun might be the only star with planets around it. Now they've admitted that it is an almost inevitable consequence of stellar formation and they have found planets around the most unlikely of stars.

Hundreds of extrasolar planets are known to us and more are discovered almost every day.

Because of the limited nature of our current search methods the vast majority of exo-planets that have been discovered are huge gas giants in close orbits scientists call "Hot Jupiters," but that is simply because they are the easiest to detect.

Even with our limited, first-generation detection capabilities, exoplanets have been found that could possibly harbor Earth-like moons in orbit around them, and we are at the beginning of the beginning of the beginning of this exciting Golden Age of discovery.

Still, one need not look to the stars to find earth-like conditions perfect for familiar forms of life. Jupiter's moon Europa has a miles thick crust of water ice under which lies a vast liquid ocean warmed by geothermic (Eurothermic) vents like the ones at the bottom of earth's ocean which are now known to be the most likely place for the beginning of Earth's own richly diverse biosphere.

It is known that everything required by science is there to support a staggeringly complex, light-less diversity of marine life.

A picture is emerging of a universe teeming with life, and with more than one hundred billion stars in our Galaxy alone, and at least that many Galaxies beyond our own, the idea that there aren't millions and millions of places that would look startlingly familiar to an earthling out there is very unlikely.

It may be that it is our destiny to expand our territory away from this island. This seems logical since we are the first animals these conditions have produced that no longer need those conditions to survive.

I for one would be greatly in support of evacuating the human population from the Earth save a small band of Rangers that would preserve it as a sort of National Park of the Solar System.

But we can't deny what we are. Either we are going to leave this place
and seek our greater destiny or we are the agents of Death come to destroy it.

No Indian Ghost Dance is going to turn back the clock. Pre-history is over. History doesn't look well.

Either we take our machines out to space to harvest the bountiful free energy and resources of our sun and its environs, or we bring about the end of this season in the story of the Earth and Nature starts again.

What could be more natural than death?
