There are no Nazis in Karl Rove's family tree

Karl Rove is not the spawn of Nazis, or the grandspawn of Nazis. His grandfather was not Carl Röver, Karl Rovener, or Karl Roverer. He was not the Gauleiter of Oldenburg, a high-ranking Nazi Party official, or the senior engineer in the Roverer Sud-Deutche Ingenieurburo A. G. Engineering, the firm built the Birkenau death camp. It's an internet legend, and it's not true.
Near as we can tell, the claim of Rove's Nazi pedigree started with free-lance muckraker Al Martin at his AlMartinRaw.com website. Virtually every mention of the Rove/Röver/ Rovener/Roverer rumor either states it as fact without citing any source at all (which ought to ring alarm bells) or mentions, reprints, or cites Martin. But at least in the Martin reports I've seen, there's no mention of where he got this information. When I wrote to Mr Martin and asked that question, I received no response to two polite inquiries. Draw your own conclusions.

Rove's biological father abandoned the family when Rove was very young, and Rove was in his 40s the one time he met his natural father as an adult. Rove's adopted family -- the only family he ever knew -- is Norwegian-American, and his grandfather was Norways Vice-Consul in Milwaukee. The name 'Rove' comes from his adoptive father, Louis Rove, and it is not an Americanization of Röver, Rovener, or Roverer. There really was a Nazi officer named Carl Röver, but nobody has presented any credible evidence that Röver was related to Karl Rove.
If you believe Karl Rove is of Nazi ancestry you've been duped. And I type this as someone who always thought she was skeptical, but I was duped by the story, too. It sounds perfectly plausible and completely in keeping with Rove's lack of character, and we read it at a credible news site (which has since retracted the story). So we briefly believed it, and mentioned it twice on our website -- and ever since, every time someone mentions "Karl Heinz Roverer" people who doublecheck it end up Googling their way to Unknown News.
Of course, we've inserted disclaimers and retractions for every mention of Rove/Röver/Rovener/Roverer, but since we had a hand in spreading this mis-information many months ago, we feel we ought to be at the forefront of the debunking. It's our debt to society. So please, listen up:
Karl Rove is a monster. He has spent his entire adult life telling lies, exploiting bigotry, abusing Christianity, and fanning false fears, all to build Republican electoral victories. He is complicit in starting a war that's killed thousands of Americans and hundreds of thousands of other people. By ordinary, un-spun standards, he is guilty of treason, having revealed the name of an undercover CIA agent (a specialist in preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction) to further the lie that led to war, the lie that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. Karl Rove is clearly, obviously, unmistakably a man of no principles, no scruples, no character, and no patriotism.
But claims that Rove is a Nazi or the grandson of Nazis are simply untrue -- and the real Rove is an abominably awful human being whose evil needs no exaggeration.
