Here is the view from afar, of Universe Alpha Prime as seen from way out in Universe "Z2," through my Interdimensional Telescope of Omniscience.
The U.S. is financially bankrupt. It has $9 trillion in official on-the-books debt, and $55 trillion in debt-plus-future-obligations. This debt is supported by an economy that has a structural trade deficit of $700 billion a year, with more jobs leaving the U.S. forever every year.
In short, there is no hope of repaying the money owed except by devaluing the currency, inflating away the debts, and reneging on promises made, such as Social Security and Medicare. In time, the US's foreign military bases will disappear under the tidal wave of red ink along with the rest of the broken promises and sworn oaths denied.
The U.S. is morally bankrupt. It is unable to distinguish between actual right and wrong in real-life matters involving The Golden Rule, and to act accordingly. Torture, pre-emptive wars, assassination by executive order, and other gross violations of human rights are tolerated by not only the government leaders and politicians in power, but by most of America's churches and corporations.
In fact, in what's sometimes called a "Christian nation," many of America's most outspoken "Christian" leaders are unhappy that the U.S. has not already attacked Iran. They are fully supportive of Israel's genocidal and discriminatory policies against Palestinian civilians.
Instead of actual morality -- the Golden Rule -- American "moral leaders" are primarily are primarily concerned about these three key issues: 1) who is allowed to fuck whom; 2) whether or not women should be obligated to give birth after getting fucked; and 3) whether or not citizens should be allowed to get high or commit suicide.
"Morality" is thus something that is applied by the government to individuals, but whatever the government itself does is "legal," and therefore "moral" by definition.
Of course, the morality of the individual citizen does not apply to the people in leadership -- the leaders, apparently, do not actually believe in morality at all, except as a tool of control. In government, in "Christian" groups, and in corporations, the leadership generally pursues the opposite of morality as much as possible, every chance they get, until they are too old to get it up, or too drunk to make roll calls anymore.
The U.S. power structure -- the government bureaucracies, politicians, corporations, mass media, and churches -- is simultaneously rigid and fragile. It is rigid because the vast majority of the people working in it suffer from "group think," and will not alter or refuse illegal or immoral orders and policies from on high for fear of losing their perks and privileges. It is fragile because it is institutionally stupid and corrupt, requiring only additional time and entropy for catastrophic collapse. As that happens, it will eliminate even the pretense, the charade of a democratic republic (i.e. The "Long Emergency" to come).
Unfortunately, and sadly, there is no possibility of change via the ballot box. Thanks to decades of gerrymandering, incumbents rarely lose and their replacements are drawn from within the enormously corrupt Two-Party Machine. Always.
And there is no point in looking to the Democrats for salvation, or for progressive change. The Democratic Party sold out to corporate lobbyists long ago, and is nothing but a septic tank of incompatible philosophies held by compromised, unprincipled politicians. The Democratic Party's lowest common denominator is simply the status quo ... which is how we got here today, with permanent war, unaffordable healthcare, two million Americans in prison, many for small amounts of reefer, etc., etc.
The only commonality in the Democratic Party is that they are not Republicans, but even that can change in an instant. And look at Democrat Joe Lieberman's instant transformation. He quit hiding in the neocon closet after he was outed by Ned Lamont, and the Republican voters hoorayed. And so we are stuck with another 5 years of Uncle Joe's warmongering for Israel. He simply could not be removed from office by the voters in his party.
The difference between "Democratic" and "Republican" politicians is infinitesimal, when you get right down to it and see what they do after the election. They serve themselves and their monied masters. Always.
* * * Bottom Line, this is where the U.S. is now: It will fall from "superpower" status in at most two decades. It will become the Belgium of the Americas -- at best. Or possibly even become a failed state, insolvent and unable to collect taxes or provide any services except military gulags to hold angry prole mobs.
Or, if things go a little worse, the U.S. could be turned into a radioactive wasteland someday. After yet another moronic miscalculation by American leaders; the next global superpower may decide that enough is enough and that it's time for American "regime change" to permanently eliminate the nuclear blackmailers from power in Washington D.C.
Because what actual power does America have, except the threat of nuking non-nuclear nations which refuse to obey Washington's dictates? Nuclear blackmail is all that is left, once the last pretense of moral authority is stripped away from an oil-starved, financially bankrupt country running massive structural trade deficits.
