Wide open to attack, and America's leaders know it

9/11 has come and gone, and with it a
renewed sense of official vigilance
about warning Americans that they could
DIE, DIE, DIE!!!@@@### For example, U.S. officials warn of persistent threats. Or simply search news.google for
U.S. threats and pick up
more than 21,000 items.
The primary threat to the United States and
the American Way of Life, of course, involves the
internet. Not because it provides free access
to information that threatens bureaucracies
and tyrants all over the world, but because it
is inherently insecure, and the software in
use today -- especially Windows -- is like
Swiss cheese.
American business and consumers are increasingly dependent upon the internet for
commerce. Many of us even use the internet
for telephone service (VoIP). If/when an enemy decides
to take down America, they will probably use the internet
as a key early attack point.
Bruce Sterling, the greatest living science fiction
writer on Earth, writes about the topic here.
The situation is quite hopeless, much like closing
the physical borders of the continental U.S.
Imagine that 50 million computers are now "bots",
owned by the "Storm" virus/trojan,

|
and collectively
have the power of the biggest supercomputer anywhere
on the planet. Why is it that "the authorities" don't
trace the IP addresses of the infected computers
and require the owners to disinfect their machines?
Well, why didn't the U.S. Air Force protect America on 11-Sep-2001?
And why are the U.S. borders wide open, with very few
inspections of imported goods? Why are there thousands
of "porno cops" but few internet security cops? Why
are street people and potheads a police priority?
Because even with explicit warnings by experts
about what can happen detailing how it will happen,
the "authorities" are either incompetent bunglers
or complicit conspirators, hoping for a new crisis
so that they can increase their authoritarian
powers and budgets.
But, as Sterling reports, the Chinese are taking
this U.S. vulnerability very seriously. So heads
up, folks! Arrange your affairs so that your operation
doesn't immediately fold when the internet is offline
for a month...
