How are you holding up? The news is not great, but don't get too bummed out. Stick to the facts, take action when you can and do not worry about things that are out of your control. But, I have to say, your country is in such a sh*t-storm these days. Economy sinking, militarily defeated in Iraq, few allies to stand with, tremendous social decay and a government body that makes the vices of Caligula seem mundane. Whew! I think that about sums it up. Here are some recommendations should you ever need them: 1. Buy two handguns. 9mm is best since that ammo is most plentiful throughout the States. Glock G17 is a good rapid reloader/nice punch within 10 meters. 2. Buy 1 M-24, 7.62mm caliber (close to a .308) with a great night scope. Learn to shoot beyond 500m (trigger control and breathing count). 7.62mm rounds are easier to scrounge than .50 cal (more traditional sniper/hunting rifle). Do not use oil to clean, use graphite as it will not freeze your mechanism. 3. Buy 1 crossbow w/ 25 bolts. Its quiet and less complicated than a compound bow. Personally, I have a 45 lb draw Martin X-200 recurve bow. 4. Buy a water purification system. Not the tablet, as it does not kill giardia. Find an Aquamira system. 5. Food. Freeze dried is best, and vitamin tablets. One week's worth to carry and then scrounge after that. Locate all food warehouse storage locations within a radius of 140 kms from where you live. (7-days walk radius) Locate supply stores in small towns as they are the least marketed locations to urban dwellers and therefore least likely to be looted en mass. 6. Plot a route to two possible safe locations at least 50 kms outside of the city, and hole up in a place offering water and natural defenses for at least a week, circumstances permitting. 7. Get a radio with HF and VHF capability to listen to military channels. Do not take anything that requires batteries, but get self-powering devices (crank). 8. Learn to read a map and use a compass. Learn about magnetic declination. 9. Clothing/sunglasses. Get the best water and wind resistant you can afford. Remember to wear it loose and in layers in the winter. Good footwear counts... not tight in the winter. 10. Move at night and stay put during the day. 11. Find out, on average, seasonally which direction the wind blows most often. Go against the prevailing winds. 12. Before entering a town, stay outside it and study it for a day or two from different POVs 13. Trust no-one in your group if they haven't eaten for a 4 days in a row. 14. Get a red filter and blue filter to cover the lens of your flashlight. Red for night, Blue for twilight. 15. Choose an RV point should you ever get separated during each leg of a journey... even at the beginning. 16. Hands: Clean yourself with your left and eat with your right. 17. Don't fear, always think. Talk little to others and listen/watch much. 18. When you need, ask me where I will be. © by the author.
