The destructive power of greed
|
by Herb Ruhs, MD, Unknown News April 17, 2008
Greed is the gateway vice. Corporate theological dogma dictates that
greed is good, that it is the core responsibility of corporate
leadership to advance the profitability of the corporation at every
opportunity, a responsibility codified in corporation law.
It
follows that all other values and principles must be held in contempt
in fact, and upheld in public as often and as hypocritically as possible.

Hence any crime in pursuit of profit can be rationalized. The full
spectrum of crime, fraud, violence, assaults on groups and
individuals, mass murder, slavery, you name it, eventually
comes into
play. Legitimate authority itself becomes a priority target to be
nullified, subverted and infiltrated in pursuit of profit. Those
corporate leaders who persist in adherence to conventional moral and
ethical values are eliminated in the process of ruthless competition.
Eventually, as we now see, a corporate infrastructure of lobbying and
public relations firms, wielding massive budgets for campaign

able to fend off any
attempts to counter it, any attempts at reform or subjugation to the
rule of law, such that the narrative of greed advances relentlessly
like a Greek tragedy fueled by the energy of its own hubris to the
point of social collapse. This is what Marx described as the final stage of capitalism, but the system of capitalism is not a necessary element in the story.
Any society that allows the subversion of the rule of an ethically
and morally founded system of laws productive of justice will meet
this fate. The acceptance of greed as a positive value, is the common
observable leading edge of self-destruction for any society.
When
the worship of greed becomes normalized on a global basis, it becomes
the necessary and perhaps sufficient cause for destruction of the
species itself.
