War on porn & attacking Hillary Clinton

Re: Justice Dept continues "war on porn" with indictment of XXX movie mogul

Operating an obscenity distribution business? Isn't half the internet porn? Last I checked porn was legal as long as all concerned parties were of age. I'm sorry, but there's either something here I'm missing or they pulled a law out of their asses. Until I see something that doesn't look like a bible-beater's hissy fit I'm going to assume the latter.

I'm looking over the list of charges and they don't make sense. Interstate commerce? Common carrier? Doesn't that just mean the movies get shipped out by mail after being ordered over the internet? Considering that adult video stores are constantly being chased out of communities (while secretly embraced by them) what the hell other avenues of sale are available? The last charge on the list suggests someone screwed up and a porno
Once somebody gets it in their head that something is offensive to them, they get the urge to purge it from the face of the Earth and to Hell with anyone who doesn't share that sentiment.

I get the idea that there are things we should shield are kids from but isn't this, y'know... stupid?
movie got into the hands of a minor, but that's hardly something you can bring down an industry for. Hell, it seems more likely an act of fraud on the minor's part in order to obtain the film.

Hey look, dad's credit card. Let's see what I can buy with it!

Instead an entire industry is being demonized and metaphorically lynched. Let's look at all the school shootings, gangland shootings, accidental discharges, and various other deaths because minors got a hold of guns. Are all the major gun manufacturers getting their founders arrested? Or how about all the kids getting horribly mistreated by parents who had a seriously twisted interpretation of The Good Book in it's many forms? Yeah, nobody's arresting God or his publisher.

Why are moral sensibilities anything but sensible? Once somebody gets it in their head that something is offensive to them, they get the urge to purge it from the face of the Earth and to Hell with anyone who doesn't share that sentiment. I get the idea that there are things we should shield are kids from but isn't this, y'know... stupid?

Re Different, not less than
Hey, did you all know that in other "civilized countries" in the world blacks, whites, men, women, and even people who are known homosexuals are considered for public office based on perceived ability and on their stance on popular issues? Sounds evolved and mature doesn't it?

Hillary (to my disappointment) has given those against her all the ammunition you need. But use your words, attack her politics and not her gender.
With all due respect, that's what we have been doing. You've been interpreting a lack of faith in her character and ever-shifting policies as an attack on her gender, and I find that bordering on offensive. It's difficult to make a specific note against her policies as she has no real stance, it shifts with the wind and constantly contradicts itself. She appears entirely artificial, putting on false airs while tailoring her personality and political agenda to the crowd. If I'm not mistaken a lack of solid foundation is what sank the Kerry campaign when he was running against Bush.

As someone who values competence above all and doesn't even consider race, religion, or gender a factor I'm going to say she is terribly ill-suited to the task of running a country. Please stop drawing the conclusion that people are attacking her gender when they are mocking her personality, or lack thereof.

And if you disagree with that it must mean you hate Canadians. It's not like you find faults in my logic or anything like that so my ethnicity must be the problem. :P

Chris D.

I've been a feminist since I was a little girl, and I usually notice it when there's sexism in the room. And criminy, I've seen a lot of sexism used to smear Hillary Clinton, starting way back while her husband was first running for President, and then in tidal waves of lies and libel and distortions and character assassination while she was First Lady, and then in further tidal waves of bigotry every time she's made news since leaving the White House. There's almost nobody in what's laughably called "mainstream" punditry who isn't guilty of misogyny aimed at Hillary Clinton, and I think that's what M.M. is complaining about -- not anything you or I have said.

If there's one arena where sexism hasn't often been used to smear Hillary Clinton it's from other Democrats as she's run for President. Randi Rhodes called Clinton and Ferraro "f**king whores", but of course she meant "whores" the cliché way, as in "media whores", "whores in Congress", "political whores", and there's nothing sexist or even gender-specific in such usage. Barack Obama made a wisecrack a while back about "the claws come out," and certainly that's sexism, but it's pretty mild and he hasn't said it a second time. Other than that, I just haven't seen more than the rarest and slightest sexism from the other Democratic candidates, from the campaigns, or from their supporters.

As for the war on pornography, of course it's stupid -- it's the Bush administration.

In many ways I envy your north-of-the-border existence, Chris. America has a long-running streak of puritanism and hypocrisy, and it's been on steroids since the day George Bush 'took' office. Under Ashcroft, Gonzales, and now Mukasey, the laughably-named Justice Department has made eradicating boners a top priority. And they don't have to pull laws out of their asses -- the laws against "obscenity" are on the books. All they do is pull their interpretations of the law out of their ass by way of their Bibles, and with compliant Bush-appointed judges they're trying their damnedest to rejigger the meaning of obscenity to an interpretation from around 1940.

It ought to make you proud to be a Canadian.
