Worries about an Obama assassination

by Sherri B.

 PERMANENT LINK
Just a few minutes ago I was chatting with a friend I've known since elementary school (and that's a very long time ago) and she just said something that chilled me to the bone. She is half-Black
(Mom) and half-German (Dad). She just told me that if Obama was assassinated the world would watch Black people stop killing themselves in the ghettos long enough to cause major havoc and destruction. She also said America would deserve every dead body that was the result of the riots that would ensue from Obama's murder. Even more chilling is that she said she wouldn't participate with weapons but she'd understand everything else. She wouldn't be above helping out whoever needed help.

This woman makes pies, she has two beautiful kids, she is in the PTA, she goes to soccer games and ballet recitals, she goes to church every Sunday (always has), and she is quite possibly the most mellow friend I have. She is the neighborhood Mom. She doesn't protest, she doesn't wear middle-finger type T-shirts. I have no idea why I'm so terrified by her abrupt change in thought patterns. She isn't sick, she doesn't have mental illness in the family. I told her I was blown away by her train of thought. She just said: "Everyone changes when pushed too hard." I asked what her husband thought. She said "He thought of it before I did." Jesus.

I want to believe that this (her desire to help rogues in the event of an assassination attempt or murder) will pass, but now I have to wonder how many people are thinking the same thing. How many are calmly preparing to help those that seek warlike behaviors because the lesser of three evils may be hurt ...

I'm just chilled. I don't have any special message. I'm just stunned.

Oh NOW it's time to panic about the recession?

Thanks for letting us know what we already knew.

Pentagon cannot account for $15 billion

Excerpt: An earlier audit by the inspector general found deficiencies in accounting for $5.2 billion of U.S. payments to buy weapons, trucks, generators and other equipment for Iraq's security forces. In addition, the Defense Department spent $1.8 billion of seized Iraqi assets with "absolutely no accountability," according to Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.), who chairs the oversight committee. The Pentagon also kept poor records on $135 million that it paid to its partners in the multinational military force in Iraq, auditors said.

No need to worry I'm sure it's around here somewhere...

(BTW Waxman is OUR regional rep and he is a total idiot.)

U.S. rice farmers want class action against Bayer

Excerpt: Germany's Bayer AG is battling to keep thousands of U.S. rice farmers from becoming part of a massive class-action lawsuit over the contamination of commercial rice supplies by a Bayer biotech rice not approved for human consumption.

Okay I might be confused here, but why create a rice unfit for human consumption in the first place? Who were they planning to feed it to? If Liberty Link isn't for humans then is it for animals? I should hope not because humans tend to eat them. If they pose no threat then why are they unfit for human consumption? Also why is Bayer's major pharma behind doing in rice production anyway? Sigh...

  Sherri,

"Fear the black" is an effective meme. Whites use it, blacks use it, but it's way, way overhyped.

Blacks get a raw deal every day in America, and already have every reason to riot in the streets. Blacks have had every reason to riot for centuries, yet riots are rare, because from the era of US slavery to the present day any uprising has been punished severely. Have the neighborhoods ruined by the Rodney King riots been rebuilt? (That's a serious question, I don't know the answer, but I suspect it's largely no.)

The threat or danger of blacks rioting in the street doesn't mean much. Past riots have made for great newscasts and much hand-wringing, and cost millions, but really, "millions" is chicken feed to the US economy. What few riots there have been have accomplished little beyond making matters worse for blacks, collectively and individually. And blacks know this, so I don't think riots in the street are a serious concern.

I hate even thinking about assassination, because America's history over recent decades is pretty plain: If you're a popular, genuinely progressive politician, and there's a chance that you might actually accomplish what's on your progressive agenda, you've got a good chance of being killed. Barack Obama doesn't seem to be a dummy, so I'm sure the thought has occurred to him. If he's not suicidal he's already taking more security-related precautions than any Presidential candidate in US history.

On the bright side, he's really not very progressive, and I don't think an Obama Presidency (if the powers that be allow it) will unsettle many billionaires' plans or affect their cash flow. I doubt that an Obama administration would be able to accomplish much beyond re-setting the American "tone" to something a little less evil than Bush-Cheney. Optimistically, my best hope from Obama is for a Carter-level Presidency -- excellent, but only by comparison to the norm -- and Clinton-level seems more likely, and please note, neither Carter nor Clinton were murdered. So, this morning anyway, optimistically, I don't expect another assassination ordered from high authority. But of course, a lone nut racist remains a vivid possibility. So I'll say again, I sure hope Obama's taking every precaution.

Regarding the rice, I think "not approved for human consumption" just means that the tests haven't been phonied up yet and the bribes haven't been paid yet to get approval to sell it for humans to eat. Once these things happen, the corporate bastards will have their profits and we'll be stuck eating pseudo-rice.
