Crush them completely with whatever is necessary

"Because this is poison to me ! This stuff you breathe, this stuff you live in, the shields of artificial atmosphere that we have layered about every planet: the programs in those computers that run your ship... and your lives for you, they bred what my body carries. That's what your science have done to me ! You've infected me! Only the primitives can cleanse me. I cannot purge myself until I am among them. Only their way of living is right. I must go to them." Dr. Sevrin

"Your very presence will destroy the people you seek. Surely you know that." Spock

"I shall go to them and be one with them. And together we shall build a world such as this galaxy has never seen. A world, a life. A life ! " Dr. Sevrin

"So now you're gonna try to persuade me that your technologies... will find a cure for me, and then I'll be free to go." Dr. Sevrin

"Yes, Doctor." Spock

"And for that reason I should persuade my friends to behave... so that they, too, will be allowed." Dr. Sevrin

"Yes, Doctor." Spock

"All right, you send them in. I'll talk to them." Dr. Sevrin

"Dr. Sevrin is insane. I've not consulted Dr. McCoy, but I have no doubt of it." Spock - A way to Eden

CIA: Killing bin Laden won't end al Qaeda

Excerpt: The United States is making "a big and continual push" to capture or kill al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden, but his demise will not end the organization's menace, CIA Director Michael Hayden said Tuesday in an Associated Press interview.

The CIA equally is interested in those jockeying to replace bin Laden in what he predicted will be a "succession crisis."

This will be a totally pragmatic view. You simply cannot deal with fanatics in this manner. In fact you cannot really deal with them at all because they are totally convinced of their correctness and infallibility. There is nothing you can do or say to convince them otherwise.

The mindset is not unlike the Japanese during WWII or the Nazis. They will fight until the very last one is dead. The ONLY way to eliminate the problem without shedding undue blood on our side would be to crush them completely with whatever is necessary. Yes, this sounds outlandish. However I do not see any other way. Remember, these people are single-minded fanatics. No less dangerous than the wacko in the movie Seven.

And the western world created them.

Chris M.

I'm not even convinced that al Qaeda per se exists, so the propagandameisters will have to work harder to convince me that every last member of al Qaeda must be killed.

As for those dreaded Japanese or Nazis during WWII, like other enemies we imagine will fight until the very last one was dead, they didn't. They fought when they were ordered to fight, and then they laid down their arms and stopped fighting when they were ordered to stop. Outside of science fiction, all our enemies, even the dratted and overhyped terrorists, are actually people, not the monsters we're told they are. They're really not that different from the rest of us.

Helen & Harry

Unfortunately Helen, your experience around fanatics -- especially those of the religious variety -- appears to be more limited than mine. I can assure you that one cannot reason with them at all. They will do whatever it takes to further their beliefs regardless of the consequences. It is a form of insanity.

As for the Japanese and Nazis remember. The Japanese fully believed that their emperor was "God" and that to die for their "God" was of the highest honor. And the Nazis did not surrender until nearly all of Germany was reduced to rubble. Even then the leaders that were left still believed what they did was right and just and said so during the Nuremberg Trials.

Chris M.

Cordially and kindly, dear Chris, again, Japanese and Nazis soldiers laid down their arms when their leaders told them to. The hype that they would "fight until the very last one is dead" was World War II propaganda. It helped sell war bonds in the 1940s, but surely 65 years later we can acknowledge that enemy soldiers in WWII were equally human and no more insane than Allied soldiers. Soldiers on both sides in that war were following orders and scared shitless and had pretty much the same "mindset" -- the "mindset" of war -- no matter which army's uniform they wore.

Some religious zealots are willing to kill, but there are nowhere near as many of them and they're nowhere near as good at killing as the Bush-Cheney administration wants you to believe. The religious fanatics we're told to be most afraid of -- those wacky Muslim fundamentalists -- are (as you say) created by the western world.

Unless I'm misunderstanding your point, you're saying that angry Muslims must be obliterated, that "one cannot reason with them at all," that there is "nothing you can do or say" to stop them. And that's just color-coded Michael Chertoff nonsense.

The "enemy" in the so-called war on terror are not maniacal monsters from some scary American murder movie. They're human beings, not insane savages, not all that different from the rest of us, and not all that hard to understand if we try. They're infuriated by what the western world has done to their family, friends, and people -- and instead of stopping what the western world has done to these people, you call for more and more of the same?

The "war on terror" is stupid, wildly exaggerated, and counterproductive, and it isn't going to be won by crushing people completely. That's not the solution, that's the root of the problem. Being completely crushed tends to piss people off.

The media tells us every day that Islamic terrorists are monsters, subhuman, and out of their minds, and you're singing along on the chorus? I hate terrorists as much as you do, as much as anyone, but let's get real:

A lot of Middle Easterners hate the western world because of what the western world has done in the Middle East. A tiny minority of these angry Middle Easterners have become terrorists. This tiny minority has been wildly overhyped by governments eager to seize control of the region, and this overhyping has been loudly echoed and amplified by easily manipulated media.

Please, back away from the hype and the lies, and remember that the enemy is human too. Virtually all of the angriest Middle Easterners would lay down their arms (just like the Nazis and Japanese did) if their war ended -- if American, British, Israeli et al governments and corporations stopped providing daily inspiration to vengeance and violence, and instead apologized, paid restitution, and treated Middle Easterners as human beings, and stopped reducing their several nations to rubble to steal their oil.

Of course, there's no money to be made from peace, and plenty of money to be made from oil, so peace won't be pursued at all. Instead we'll get mountains of made-up nonsense about "Islamofascists" and how they're all insane and they'll fight to the death and they can't be reasoned with and it's appeasement to even hear their complaints and what we really need to do is triple the bombings.

Please. I read that rubbish in the newspaper every day, don't make me read it from someone I like, like you.
