Our political theater of the absurd

by Herb Ruhs, MD       Friday, August 29, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

I am scratching my head bald trying to understand how people can continue to believe in the utter farce that our national politics has become. I am coming to believe that it is all about denial and only very superficially about belief.

The meaningless spectacle of the national party conventions has to have dislodged the last remaining thinking holdouts clinging to a tortured logic about recovery through reform. National politicians demonstrably are taking orders from the wings. Promises, as usual, are for the gullible public. Actions are as ordered by their corporate bosses. Under these conditions the urge to sink into denial has to be irresistible for very many otherwise thinking citizens.

Many folks remain more under the influence of a mesmerizing toxic mainstream media than of self-induced denial, but that matters little. The weak minded and the confidence men they attract
will always be with us. What always matters is what stronger minds think.

By now it should be clear to anyone with a functioning mind that our political process has become a mere matter of theater designed to conceal the fact that our country has become a corporate pirates' nest, where the only political issues left in play are those that in no way step on any pirate's toe nor threatens the continued hauling in of the loot.

The country is a wreck and falling ever more rapidly into decay, but from the view of the pirates this is a good thing. What is left to decorate our political facade are the insane and meaningless conflicts around various cultural preoccupations that serve to further divide the people into atomized antagonistic subgroups.

The only thing pirates fear is strong effective government. Social decay, infrastructure decay, political decay, industrial decay, educational decay, health status decay, and all the rest of the measures of national decay that confront us serve the purpose of securing and enforcing pirate rule. A prostrate country is no threat to the pirates, and that is the way they like it.

As it is, the pirates are in pig heaven. Vast treasures are being looted and hidden away in secret accounts and far away places. The most threatening military ever devised, funded almost entirely by debt tribute from China, Japan and Europe, has become a toy in the hands of these depraved ruthless pirates. One worldwide swindle after another goes down without a whimper from a world held hostage to nuclear blackmail. Banks around the world are failing as a result of these financial swindles, as they are left holding a worthless bag of "structured financial instruments" that were vastly corruptly overvalued by formerly trustworthy rating agencies. I am sure that the pirates are reacting with glee to the lack of response to their crimes by their victims.

Pirates don't care if their predations bring about a general collapse of the world economy and massive impoverishment and death. Their goal is merely to collect treasure and continue to act with unlimited impunity. It is a game for them, a catastrophe for the rest of us.

If we the people develop the courage and clearmindedness to stand up and take on the pirates, we can win. The price of taking action will be immense, but the price of not taking action will be much, much greater. Absent action by an outraged public, the only other conceivable obstacle the pirates face is a rebellious military. For me, in light of a continuing and deepening passivity by the public, it has come down to a hope that loyal elements of the military can redirect themselves toward their oath to support the Constitution.

It is sad indeed when hope presents itself as the very unlikely possibility of a military coup willing to reestablish democratic rule. Clutching at straws we sink into the quicksand of history.

Today, Doc, you've spoken to my inner pessimist... Absent action by an outraged public, we're screwed every which way you look. And with a corporate-controlled press blocking instead of facilitating the free, unfettered flow of honest information to we the people, the public will never know, and thus never take action.
