Won't you join the fight against assholitis? by Herb Ruhs, MD "Shit floats." I have heard this particular cliché so many times that it qualifies as a mantra. Everyone I have ever known, who I respect, has reflected on the fact that in every organization they have ever been part of, the worst people rise to positions of control. People routinely complain of enthusiastically joining new groups only to see their enthusiasm trashed as assholes maneuver their way into control. This experience of domination by assholes is an across the board phenomenon, with rare exceptions proving the rule. The terms "office politics" and "academic politics" induce some of
An obvious conclusion stemming from this observation is that the path to true liberation must lie in the direction of confronting assholes. Experience also proves that this is not a job for individuals or small groups. Assholes love being able to make examples of people in weak positions that imprudently challenge them. Assholes also have a natural bent towards solidarity. Experience also shows that if an asshole actually does get imperiled, other assholes will show up to rescue them and destroy their accusers. Assholes are masters of conspiracy and deceit. The main assets in their struggle for dominance over the rest of us are the natural impulses of non-assholes to be trusting and fair. Another great boon for assholes is the tendency of non-assholes to blame themselves for outcomes that are actually the results of crafty efforts by assholes. For instance, we see Oprah coming out of the voting booth with a report that her effort at electronic voting failed to accurately reflect her choices, and who does she blame? "I must have done something wrong," she says. Shouldn't we demand that election systems actually work under normal use? The manifest absurdity of the so called "electoral system" (actually a system of voting manipulation) is a very good case for us to examine. The fact that the majority consistently puts up with this abuse convicts the majority of hopeless cluelessness. An alert and self-respecting citizenship would be outraged and take out their rage on every elected officer not clearly fighting for electoral reform. Instead we have witnessed a silting up of the entire system of government by total assholes, largely as a result of this twisted electoral system. So it seems to me that, until we non-assholes (I think I belong to this group) realize that we need to organize ourselves at bottom up, grassroots levels to effectively confront assholes at every level, from family groups to the national leadership, we will be condemned to an ever increasing level of suffering at the hands of folks that we have good reason to dislike. We may always have to deal with assholes but we don't need to let them control our lives. We don't have to be lambs to the slaughter, not if we band together.
