Or, have their cake and eat it too. I've always thought that's a strange thing for a person whose Savior was tortured to death to say. ...

How do some so-called Christians justify their very unchristian position in support of torture? "These people don't respect human rights. They behead not only enemy soldiers, but also the civilians they capture."

And if we do the same thing to innocent detainees that will make it right, they seem to imply. Here's an alternative counter-argument I hear: "We can not afford to give full rights to detainees. That's suicide."

Our Founding Fathers and laws state otherwise. Moreover, the principles of Christianity the faithful claim to uphold also say the opposite. Do they really think it's okay to occasionally torture an innocent detainee in order to save thousands? Occasionally, I do get a virtual "yes" to that question; it goes something like this: "I think it's unfortunate if an innocent person is detained, but that's the price we have to pay in the modern world for our safety. Yes, torturing one to save thousands is the tough choice we have to make."

Ironically, Pontius Pilate might also have reasoned that he would save thousands who would have otherwise died in a violent rebellion by crucifying one innocent. Whenever I mention this, I always hear the following response: "You are really stretching things if you are comparing these scum-bag terrorists to Jesus Christ."

And finally we've cut to the quick of why a Christian can't possibly support torture. A Christian is required to believe that Christ is in our fellow man, especially including the prisoner. Recall the words of Matthew 25:34-46:

"Then the King will say to those on his right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my Father. Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me.'

"Then the righteous will answer him and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?'

"And the king will say to them in reply, 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.'

"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison, and you did not care for me.'

"Then they will answer and say, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison, and not minister to your needs?'

"He will answer them, 'Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.'

"And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life."

If they really believe Christ is not in the prisoner, then they don't believe the words of Christ himself. If self-professed Christians really believe it's "suicide" to honor the Christ in the prisoner, can they really be believers? If they think that the Christian worldview is impractical, isn't that a clear example of lack of faith?

Theo Lipschitz

# This is a beautifully short and sweet essay by Bill Bonner:

China: The hope of the world economy?

Excerpt: "Leave it to time to affect a permanent cure by the slow process of adapting the structure of production ... The best that can be done in such circumstances is to shut down those production processes that turned out to have been based on assumptions about future demands that did not come to pass. The liquidation of such investments and businesses releases factors of production from unprofitable uses; they can then be redeployed in other sectors of the technologically dynamic economy. Without the initial liquidation the redeployment cannot take place. And, said Hayek, depressions are this process of liquidation and preparation for the redeployment of resources.

"As Schumpeter put it, policy does not allow a choice between depression and no depression, but between depression now and a worse depression later: 'inflation pushed far enough [would] undoubtedly turn depression into the sham prosperity so familiar from European postwar experience, [and] ... would, in the end, lead to a collapse worse than the one it was called in to remedy.' For 'recovery is sound only if it does come of itself. For any revival which is merely due to artificial stimulus leaves part of the work of depressions undone and adds, to an undigested remnant of maladjustment, new maladjustment of its own which has to be liquidated in turn, thus threatening business with another [worse] crisis ahead.'

I saw Obama on TV yesterday crowing about diverting $2 billion from the stimulus funds to pay for cities to hire more cops. That is because each new flat-footed flunky and bureaucrat creates additional costs and funding requirements. For example, a cop has to make arrests and write tickets, or else... AIG is the fulcrum upon which many banks rest their CDOs. If AIG fails, the world's banking system will suffer terribly. It's frankly amazing that one company, whose 400 employees in their London, UK, office wreaked such world havoc! It was this office that created the majority of these credit default derivatives in such volume as if they were printing paper advertising flyers for Wal-Mart.

"European banks were particularly at risk from an AIG bankruptcy by owning three-quarters of the USD 441 billion in unregulated complex security instruments protected by AIG, the New York Times reported. The securities are tied to the plunging subprime mortgage market. Tens of millions of policy holders worldwide, including in Europe, were at risk as well. A bankruptcy filing by AIG, a huge world player in insuring risk for institutions, would have had an even greater impact on the US and global finance system than the USD 600 billion bankruptcy by Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc, industry experts warned" --neurope.eu/articles/89812.php

It is the same reason why Fannie May and Freddie Mac could not fail. Had they failed, so would have foreign investment confidence in the US economy. If no-one lends to the US, the US has no economy. The top five foreign holders of Freddie and Fannie long-term debt are China, Japan, the Cayman Islands, Luxembourg, and Belgium. In total foreign investors hold over $1.3 trillion in these agency bonds, according to the US Treasury's "Report on Foreign Portfolio Holdings of US Securities."

"For anyone who still doubted the growing global influence of such emerging powerhouses as China, consider this: The US government's decision to take control of foundering mortgage giants Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) was driven not by worries about the fading US housing market, but by concerns that foreign central banks in China, Japan, Europe, the Middle East and Russia might stop buying our bonds. As the bailout announced Sunday is currently structured, more than $1.3 trillion worth of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac debt currently held by the central banks and other investors in those regions will be guaranteed by the US government - even if one or both of the two government-sponsored enterprises (GSEs) were to fail. That means that US taxpayers -- government parlance for you and me - will ultimately foot a big part of the bill for making sure those foreign bondholders are "made whole." --moneymorning.com/2008/09/11/fnm/

Re: Japanese government in crisis as recession deepens on the world socialist website. This article is true. In fact, the Japanese economy never really recovered from the deep recession of the 80's. The US bailout plan is following the same logic of the Japanese Central Bankers of that time. Although presently the US has some better tactics to address the issue than the Japanese did of that time. I also generally like the articles of the Socialist website.

"Another lesson from Japan: Don't try to spend your way out of an economic trough. Japan ramped up government spending on public works projects, including bridges and river "improvement" programs that literally lined many waterways with cement. But it didn't work, and today the only evidence of this spending binge is the ugly slabs of cement that mar the Japanese countryside. In other ways, though, the US is more vulnerable than Japan was in the 1990s. Japan has one of the highest savings rates in the world; the US among the lowest. Japanese consumers, flush with savings, maintained virtually the same rates of consumption throughout the 1990s. American consumers have no such savings to draw upon - and, in fact, carry heavy debt loads - including debt accrued through home equity loans. "It is the debt load of consumers in the US that makes US problems much worse than what happened in Japan," argues blogger Mike Shedlock in globaleconomicanalysis.com. As many analysts have pointed out, millions of American homeowners used their houses as ATMs. That ATM, however, is now out of service and probably won't be open for business again anytime soon." --npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=88156284

The Canadian

# I suppose we all should admit now -- come out of Denial about it -- that our new President is perfectly unequipped to solve any of the most serious problems confronting us. My theory is that the US government is going to print arbitrarily large amounts of money, possibly a quadrillion dollars if that is what it takes, to try to stop this dang recession. So that means converting our dollars ahead of time into other things that will have purchasing power later. It is a gift from God that the US dollar has been appreciating against most foreign currencies for the last 6 months or so, as this is a second chance to make an escape (or is it a third chance?) Anyway, it is an act of mercy for those smart enough to recognize it for what it is.

Billie Cavanaugh

# Israel kills five militants in air raid on Gaza Strip

Israel waited until Clinton left before making its intended move.

Wig

# Rove and Miers reach negotiated agreement to testify on US attorney firings

And they'll testify "under penalty of perjury".

The proper way to grow good fangs is either:

very slowly, if they're to be few but last a long while, like a dog or person

or very rapidly, if they're to be many and be constantly replaced, like a shark.

I like dogs.
