The issue had slipped under my radar for a while, but I think it's about time I got pissed off about it again.

This might be the indignant, self-rightous bastard in me talking but how about putting forth a proposal to end the legal benefits of marriage for straight couples? Several pretenses can be used, such as the separation of church and state, and equalizing married and unmarried individuals in the eyes of the law. (You don't seem to have as much stature in today's society unless you're hitched.)

This will generate one of two outcomes, and both of which can be turned to an advantage.

First off, if it's challenged by the same jackwipes that decided to bar homosexuals from marrying based on their religious beliefs they will be forced to defend marriage without the benefit of waving a bible around. If successful, they'll have to apply the same arguments to once again preventing gays from marrying. If marriage, stripped of it's religious significance is a 'right' to them, then it's a 'right' to anyone wishing to share their lives together.

Second, if it actually passes, then it's acknowledging that married couples are no better than the rest of us and won't be getting the breaks denied to bachelors and bachelorettes. The only non-religious argument I've heard against gay marriage, (which is still pretty damned weak,) is that people will try to jump on the band wagon for benefits. i.e. two straight men moving in together, claiming marriage, and getting a tax break. (Oh, like a man and woman wouldn't do that?) If the legal benefits: tax-breaks, inheritance, child support, etc aren't available to gay men and women then why should it be available to any other people who married out of convenience? 'Yeah, you can get married, but it doesn't mean a damned thing anymore.' This will piss everyone off, and will likely stir a little more action than what we've seen as people will stand to lose something from this argument. Most people will unfortunately shrug off anything that doesn't directly and detrimentally affect them.

And back to our regularly scheduled ranting:

Health coverage 'plan' was no insurance at all

Ah, America. Credit cards that can charge you interest on any purchase you make and additionally apply a fee for not having a balance owing at the end of the month. Full medical coverage that doesn't actually cover your medical bills because at the last second the sales rep convinced you that you had to switch to a similar plan (which is in no way the similar to the one you researched and agreed to) that instead offers a discount, (at participating locations, which is none) on hospital bills you still have to pay yourself. Oh, by the way you don't actually qualify for this plan, though I'm still letting you pay into it... And it's non-refundable. So sorry.

Okay, if this is legal then perhaps we shouldn't prosecute alleged con artists for duping people into pyramid, ponzi, and other empty-promise investment schemes. Basically, they're the same thing. The offer of a thousand and one promises with no real substance, subject to the old bait and switch at any given time. When caught, it's your own stupid fault for not noticing.

It was all in the fine print of the contract. (That was never sent to you and you wouldn't have read anyway because I 'explained' the legalese for you. That is why, when a rats encounters a strange food it eats just a little bite. Then, if it doesn't die, the next time it comes back that way it eats the whole thing.

This story reminded me of Goldman Sachs and the other Wall Street crime syndicates who took just a little bite of Enron. That humongous scandal produced remarkably few jail terms for Wall Streeters, though it nearly brought down the financial system, and the fines and settlements paid by the fraudster banks and brokerages were minuscule in comparison to the damage. The post-Enron environment was essentially a massive whitewash designed to bury the truth of the criminal involvement of most big financial system players as well as most of the Washington D.C. politicians. So, since the rats didn't die, they came back and tried to eat the entire financial system. Curiously, the Obama Regime has sought almost no punishments for the guilty but has perpetuated the mega-trillion dollar bailout schemes of the Bush Regime.

What will the rats try to eat next, the whole planet?

But back to Goldman Sachs. In its current fnancial condition, it will not be able to fund its forecasted budget defcits and unfunded Social Security and Medicare promises on top of its current debt obligations. This isn t offcial yet, and we don t know when the market will react to it, but there is no longer any doubt about the extent of their trajectory. There simply isn t enough taxing power, value creation or outside capital willing to support its egregious spending. ...

Three years later, the fnancial condition of the US government is completely untenable. The projected US defcit from 2009 to 2019 is now slated to be almost $9 trillion dollars. How on earth does anyone expect them to raise this capital? As we stated in a previous article, in order to satisfy US capital requirements, all existing investors would have had to increase their US bond purchases by 200% in fscal 2009. Foreigners, however, only increased their purchases by a mere 28% from September 2008 to July 2009 — far short of what the US government required. The US taxpayer can t cover the difference either. According to recent estimates, tax revenue from all sources would have to increase by 61% in order to balance the 2010 fscal budget. Given that State government income tax revenues were down 27.5% in the second quarter, the US government will be lucky just to maintain its current level of tax revenue, let alone increase it.

The bottom line is that there is serious cause for concern here — and don t be fooled into thinking this crisis will fx itself when (and if) the economy recovers.

The coming public pension nightmare

Excerpt: With all the fiscal problems created by Barack Obama, the public pension crisis cannot be laid at his doorstep. That's because public unions — police, firefighters, teachers, state and local workers, and transit employees — have been gouging cities and states for years, sweetening their pensions at taxpayer expense until a nightmare is now on the horizon; the inability of cities and states to pay for these diamond-studded pension plans.

And that will eventually mean a taxpayer bailout to end all taxpayer bailouts.

Forget rising federal taxes. The rate of increase that will be necessary to pay for these pensions in the near future will necessitate massive increases in taxes along with massive borrowing. There's just no way around it — unless the union's current defined benefit plans can be renegotiated to reflect reality.

That's not likely to happen. What makes these plans so enormously expensive is the early retirement feature and the number of years one must work to be vested, or eligible for payments. Some of these plans are so generous that a retiring public worker at age 55, after having worked only 10 years (or less) in the system, is eligible for 75% or more of their highest salary - for life. For the slightly less radical folks, the public option that's barred from partnering with Medicare to maximize the government's buying power was a compromise down from a Medicare-like insurance plan. For the folks even less radical than that, the public option that states can "opt out" of is a compromise from the straight public option. From there, it is only one of many options on the exchange, and only in states that choose to have it. The Supreme Court might take my call, but it's unlikely they'll return my call or answer my questions because I'm not a reporter. Bloggers who spread unfounded rumors and make stuff up deserve all the criticism in the world, but bloggers who believe and comment on a perfectly plausible newspaper report aren't doing anything shoddy -- they're blogging, and there's nothing inherently wrong with that.

♦ The Moonie-owned and far-right Washington Times reports with slack-jawed surprise that the Obama administration is rewarding big donors with White House access, like every other administration since the White House was built. Predictably, the Republican Party is shocked, shocked, and calling for an investigation. In the past there have always been a few high-profile fights, as well as a general slowdown toward the end of most presidencies when the minority party hopes that a few months of stalling will allow them to take office and fill the vacancies themselves. It's not pretty, but not surprising either.
But this presidency is different. Republicans are holding up everyone, and they're doing it during Obama's first year. Not a single appellate judge has gotten a vote yet.

♦ President Obama has appointed former Senator Chuck Hagel (R-Nebraska) as co-chairman of the President's Intelligence Advisory Board. Every pundit and blogger who's Dem-friendly is furious but why waste the emotion? What's the surprise? He's Joe Lieberman, and whatever label he wears, he's been a Republican for decades, working against whatever decent Democrats want, but he's always welcome to caucus with Democrats because ... well, I've never figured that out.

♦ Congressman Paul Broun (R-Georgia) has introduced legislation to privatize Medicare. He's best known for comparing Obama to Hitler and stating that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) and Senator Harry Reid (D-Nevada) are plotting martial law for America, so what it probably means is that Broun's about to announce he's running for President.

♦ Congressman Alan Grayson has apologized for calling a lobbyist a whore, and it just makes me roll my eyes, almost as much as this politically correct response. I've read it for a while now regularly. You offer news and comment without ranting. Thank you.

There are lots of alternative health care plans from around the world being discussed now. I'd like to mention one about which I've seen very little in the news or the blogs.

I have lived in Germany for the last twenty years. Their system deserves a bit of attention. It bridges the "socialistic" NHS in England and the scorched-earth, capitalistic system now in America and may be more palatable to the public as a whole. There is a "gesetzliche Krankenkasse" (a public, mandated health insurance) that everybody, with very few exceptions, has to belong to. It covers basically everything. It is regulated by the government and provided by private companies. Its coverage is very good on all counts, but if you wish you can add other policies privately. It's administered just the way that American Social Security works: It is deducted as a percentage of your salary with your employer matching your contribution. There are systems in place for self-employed artists that take the place of your employer, and there are no exceptions or restrictions for prior or present conditions. The effect that it has on the on the health care system as a whole is huge.

An anecdote: In 1996 I suddenly had Pneumonia. It showed no noticeable symptoms until it became life-threatening. I was one of those who fell through the cracks and showed up at the emergency room, unable to breathe and without insurance. They put me into the intensive care unit and kept me under sedation for about a week while they pumped various ugly fluids out of my lungs and kept me on an intravenous diet of antibiotics. Then a week under observation and I was discharged. There were questions of how I would pay for the bill, and I was afraid I would be financially ruined. When I finally received the bill it was about $4000 complete--hospital, doctors, drugs, everything! Except for the "Drainage" there was no operation, and except for antibiotics and observation there wasn't much to be done, but what would a week in intensive care and a further week in the hospital have cost in America?

Wouldn't a plan like that be of interest to Americans? It's regulated and mandated, and you can extend it (at extra cost) to your heart's and pocketbook's content. The insurance companies are constantly complaining (from their penthouses and Mercedes) that there isn't enough money to go around, and they occasionally get rate hikes. The demographics and longer life spans coupled with lower birth rates just about require that, but the system works. People get health care and don't go bankrupt. It even includes mental health, nursing homes (Kur) and alternative medicine (Acupuncture, Chiropractic, etc.) with appropriate paper work from your GP. It works. Enough said. Thanks for your time, and keep up the good work, Steve B

| Permalink | Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009 |

Reply from Helen & Harry:

Sure sounds good to me. But instead, the company put together four study sites that "are not necessarily representative, and may not even have enough numbers to determine what they need to know."

She believes the ideal way of administering the new vaccine is to offer it to women ages 18 and up. At the time of their first inoculation, they should be tested for the presence ofHPV in their system. If the test comes back negative, then schedule the follow-up series of the three-part shots.

But if it comes back positive? "Then we don't know squat, because medically we don't know how to respond to that," Harper said.

She said that vaccinating little girls now is not going to protect them later. Since it can take a decade or more to even manifest itself asdysplasia, the HPVs against which this vaccine works may infect a little girl at the age she needs the vaccine most — meaning she will have to have a booster at the right point in time or she will not be protected. And, remember, it won't work at all if she was positive for the virus when she was inoculated in the first place.

Merck knows this, Harper said. "To mandate now is simply to Merck's benefit, and only to Merck's benefit," she said. It sounds to me like a big old case ofCYA before the truth hits the fan.

My problems with Gardasil's handling of the HPV issue are...

(From Rutgers): The Human Papilloma Virus (HPV ) is the cause of both genital and non-genital warts. This is a very common family of viruses. There are actually more than 100 different strains ofHPV. Of these, approximately 30 exist in the genital area and can cause genital warts (condyloma acuminata ). These 30 strains can be further broken down to "high" and "low" risk strains.

High risk strains may cause changes in a Pap smear which may rarely progress to cancer. There are approximately 13 high-risk strains ofHPV , of which two (16 & 18) are believed to cause about 70% of all cervical cancer. Low risk strains sometimes cause changes in a Pap smear, but do not progress to cancer. Of the low-risk strains, two (6 &11) are most likely to cause genital warts.

Then it goes on to say: Limitations: Vaccination will help prevent infection withHPV, but will not treat an infection that is already present. Once infected with a strain of HPV, immunity to that strain typically develops. However, even in someone already infected with HPV, the vaccine may still make sense as it can protect against other strains of HPV. The vaccine protects against the most common strains of HPV, but not others. Since not all strains are covered, regular gyn exams and Pap smears are still necessary.

Administration and side effects: A total of three shots given over six months (0, 2, 6 months). Side effects are typically mild (local pain or redness, low grade fevers, nausea, dizziness)

Who is it recommended for? Girls/women between the ages of 9-26 While there is an advantage if it is given before sexual activity has begun (to insure no prior infection withHPV), there is still a benefit in giving to women who may have already been infected with HPV as it will protect against other strains.

Oh and finally:

Most people "cure" themselves — usually without ever knowing that they were infected. This would be the usual treatment for those women found to haveHPV on routine testing or with mildly abnormal Pap smears.

So...four out of "more than" 100 strains (Rutgers not saying anything about possible mutations of said strains or what "more than 100 strains" signifies) and the assertion(You have to take thepharma companies word) that the four they are protecting women from are truly the right four to stop them from getting cancer(2 of the 4 strains) and warts(2 of the 4 strains).

So a person gets this shot, after reading the disclaimer saying it might not fully protect everyone, does not prevent all types of cervical cancer, and does not protect against diseases caused by otherHPV types. Then has to hope that after this shot none of the other different strains manifest or the person drops from the lovely side effects — the long term effects of which have not been evaluated.

Nice.

Back to Dr.Harper: "She says data available forGardasil shows that it lasts five years; there is no data showing that it remains effective beyond five years."

So what happens after five years? We try to track news that merits more attention, only from mainstream, professional journalists, or (rarely) other sources we trust entirely.

What we believe

We believe in liberty and justice for all, so of course, we oppose many US government policies. This doesn't mean we're anti-American, redneck scum, pinko commies, militia members, or terrorist-sympathizers. It means we believe in freedom, as more than merely a cliché.

We believe you have the right to live your own life as you choose, and others have the equal right to live their lives as they choose. It's not complicated.

We believe freedom leads to peace, progress, and prosperity, while its opposite -- oppression -- leads to war, terrorism, poverty, and misery.

We believe it's preposterously stupid to hate people because of their appearance, their race or nationality, their religion or lack of religion, how they have sex with other consenting adults, etc. There are far more apropos reasons to hate most people.

We believe in questioning ourselves, our assumptions, each other -- and we especially believe in questioning authority (the more authority, the more questions). We believe obedience is a fine quality in dogs and young children, but not in adults.

Like America's right-wingers, we believe in individual responsibility, hard work to get ahead, and stern punishment for serious crimes. We believe big government should not be blindly trusted.

But unlike most right-wing leaders, we mean it.

Like America's left-wingers, we believe in equal treatment under law, war as a last (not first) resort, and sensible stewardship of natural resources. We believe big business should not be blindly trusted.

But unlike most left-wing leaders, we mean it.

Like libertarians, we believe it's wrong and reprehensible to arrest people for what they think, believe, look like, wear, eat, smoke, drink, inhale, inject, or otherwise do to themselves.

But unlike many libertarians, we're not obsessed with the gold standard, we don't believe incorporation is humanity's highest achievement, and we don't believe everything in life comes down to dollars and cents. We've read and enjoyed Ayn Rand's novels, but we understand that they're works of fiction.

We're skeptical, and we're sick of so-called 'journalists' who aren't skeptical at all.

A reader asks, what are our solutions?

We propose no solutions except common sense, which is never common. We like the principles of democracy, and the ideals broadly described as 'American'. The US Constitution is a fine and workable framework for solutions, when it's actually read and thoughtfully understood by intelligent statesmen and women. So, no manifestos from us. We don't dream that big, and if there's one thing the world doesn't need it's yet another manifesto.

Our suggestion is: think.

A fact-based instead of faith-based approach leads to solutions for most of the recurring issues of our time, from abortion to global climate change, pollution to universal health care, careful but real regulation of industry and economy, hunger, war, terror, human rights for humans not for corporations, science not religious doctrine in public schools, equal protection and prosecution under law, etc. Approach problems without glorifying stupidity, without demonizing intelligence, and answers usually come into focus.

These pages are published by Harry and Helen Highwater, happily married low-income nom de plumes and rabble-rousers from Madison, Wisconsin (with a few friends scattered around the world helping out).

We try to spotlight news that hasn't gotten enough (or appropriate) attention in American media, along with our opinions and yours.

We bang our keyboards against the wall, because it doesn't hurt as much as banging our heads.

Helen & Harry Highwater

  (from About Unknown News)

You can help

If the news frustrates or angers you, please, find a group, plan a picket, and become an active activist.
