The populations of many African countries suffer from nonexistent to negligible health care, and many of the most foul diseases known to mankind are not only flourishing there but are evolving into newer, more virulent forms. High birth rates and extremely high AIDS rates, weakening peoples' immune defenses, only make matters worse.
Africa is basically an enormous stationary biological weapons laboratory. And with rapid air travel across the globe, it is only a matter of time before the next deadly epidemic evolves there and strikes all of us on Earth.
In my view, the problems of Africa are our problems too. The threat from diseases evolving in Africa is far more dangerous than the threat of Islamic terrorism — and not far behind the threat of American NeoCon/Evangelical Rapturists (who favor WWIII on ideological and theological grounds.)

Excerpt: The combination of six viruses is designed to be sprayed on ready-to-eat meat and poultry products, including sliced ham and turkey, said John Vazzana, president and chief executive officer of manufacturer Intralytix Inc.
Comment: Okay, there are a couple problems with this — besides the obvious one of letting companies add viruses to our food!
First of all, the viruses are meant to kill harmful bacteria, but they are prepared in a solution of the bacteria they are supposed to be killing, and some of that bacteria may very well make its way onto the food. "Tests" found that this didn't happen, but until I find out who did those tests, I have no faith in this at all.
The other problem is that viruses constantly evolve. This is why we need a new flu vaccine every year, and why everyone is freaking out about a "bird flu" even though right now it can only be spread directly from birds to people. When these viruses in our meat evolve, we might not know it until millions of people get sick from their lunch meat all at once.
It's a pandemic waiting to happen, but it's cheaper than keeping the bacteria off the food in the first place, so the food industry thinks it's a great idea, and that's good enough for the FDA.
And as an extra added bonus, companies will not have to label food that has viruses added to it, for obvious reasons.

If you think about it, we don't actually have a health care crisis, or any other "crisis" for that matter. What we have is a financial and managerial class that has shifted all the weight onto the backs of those least able to defend themselves in this system, and all the wealth into their pockets.
When you step back and take a more comprehensive look at these various "crises" there is only one central, organizing crisis, a crisis of leadership that extends from the White House to your local Chamber of Commerce.

By ignoring global climate change for so many years, we've now reached the point where the changes in weather are becoming obvious to anyone. In more than a century of weather records, 2006 is the hottest year ever.
But the Bush-Cheney administration's response is to muzzle scientists, have political appointees rewrite science findings, and eliminate the budget for monitoring climate change. And now, remove earth entirely from NASA scientists' purview.
You no longer need to read science journals to understand global warming, just understand this: Unless they bring scuba gear, your grandchildren will never see Venice — or Miami, or Manhattan, or San Francisco.
And still, the Bush-Cheney administration turns their backs on the problem, and pretends it isn't a problem at all.
