Would this happen in a democracy?

by SirJ       Monday, June 30, 2008       PERMANENT LINK

Would this happen in a democracy? The Free Flow of Information Act passed the House last fall with a vote of 398-21, which is 95% of those voting. In the Senate, the Judiciary Committee recommended it by a vote of 15-4, which is 79% in favor. Both presidential candidates support the bill. However, it won't be voted in by the Senate because "no-one can get the whole Senate to vote on it."

When over 80% of Congress is in favor of something, the future president of the United States is in favor of it, and it STILL cannot get passed, then we don't live in a democracy. Anybody who believes otherwise, please explain how this could happen in a democracy.

What's his name?

Air Force: US nukes in Europe not safe

Excerpt: Most American bases in Europe where nuclear weapons are stored have inadequate security, a secret internal US air force review has found.

The report, which was ordered after the US air force lost track of six nuclear cruise missiles last August, found that "support buildings, fencing, lighting and security systems" were in need of repair.

In some cases, it was found that conscripts with less than nine-months experience were being used to guard the nuclear weapons. Elsewhere private security guards were used to protect the bombs.

I remember something about four years ago where we were thinking about putting this guy in charge of the entire country who said on national television that unsecure nuclear material was the biggest security threat to the US. But then he went windsurfing and looked like a complete doofus so we collectively decided to hell with it.

Promising Solar Power Technologies

(The first technology is a light collection system designed by MIT students. Their idea is to use off-the-shelf components and to design the total product for lowest cost and ease of assembly. You can't have one in your backyard due to the extremely dangerous lightbeam which is hot enough to melt steel...)

Churches above the law

Texas Court says church can't be sued over abusing and imprisoning girl for exorcism

This is just wacky — the Court says the First Amendment protects a "church" that holds a kid against her will and injures her? By this reasoning anyone can get away with anything by feigning religion.

Slippery slope to doom

by JR Mooneyham       Monday, June 30, 2008       PERMANENT LINK

The middle class continues its sad disappearing act

Years ago I wrote up the first draft to my own long term view of the fate of the middle-class. I was spurred to do it by the disturbing things I learned while researching my future timeline. It basically describes the slippery slope to doom, and how we're easily lured into such a course.

Like any other politician

by Chris M.       Monday, June 30, 2008       PERMANENT LINK

Obama is shifting toward the center

Excerpt: And Obama endorsed a compromise wiretapping bill despite stiff opposition from liberal activists. MoveOn.org, the liberal online activist group, asked its members to flood Obama's campaign office with phone calls and e-mails urging him to support a filibuster of the bill.

The changes carry some risk that Obama will diminish the image he has sought to build as a new type of leader who will change how Washington conducts business. McCain and other Republicans have used his recent policy statements to argue that Obama is a traditional politician, unwilling to take clear stands on tough issues and abandoning his principles when he finds it advantageous.

Really??? Obama is a politician. He'll do or say anything he feels is necessary to get elected, like any other politician. He has been bought and paid for like all the rest. The problem is that those who call themselves "the netroots", a bunch of delusional shallow bourgeois clowns, believe that because he's black, Obama will embrace their pseudo-leftist beliefs ... BULLSHIT!!

Politics is non-gender, non-ethnic specific. Politicians are all self-serving, power-hungry fuckers who are totally in bed with the cretins from Wall Street. Always have been. Some are just smatter and better at bullshitting the public enough to elected.

So to those who still thing he, or anyone else, is going to be some sort of "white (or black as the case maybe) knight"... go back to your DVD collections or youtube and watch those George Carlin routines that so many of you say you will miss. And fucking pay attention this time.

Chris M.
A lot of enthusiastic but naïve people really think that Obama is somehow going to be 'different' from other politicians, and most people have noticed that he's black, but I haven't heard anyone suggest that Obama would be different or pseudo-leftist "because he's black".

Realistically, forgetting all the "Yes we can" claptrap, Obama's strongest selling point is pretty much the same as John Kerry's four years ago — the other guy is much, much worse.

Good buddies

by Fazookus       Monday, June 30, 2008       PERMANENT LINK

Re We know who did this to America
What is happening to America and affecting the rest of the world is not a conspiracy of the Bilderbergs, but an almost complete disconnect between America's political and business leadership...
I thought that they were good buddies. Good points otherwise.
