For those who like sex

Bush administration moves to crack down on contraception

Excerpt: Family planning groups and at least one member of Congress objected on Tuesday to a Bush administration memo that defines several widely used contraception methods as abortion and protects the right of medical providers to refuse to offer them.

The proposal would cut off federal funds to hospitals and states that attempt to compel medical providers to offer legal abortion and contraception services to women.

The proposal circulated to media defines abortion broadly to include many types of contraception, including birth control pills and intrauterine devices.

I don't understand why the men aren't freaking out. If contraception is banned, how often do you think you're going to get laid? Not only does birth control liberate women to be in control of their sex lives, it does the same for men. Wake up guys.

MonkeyMan
Of course, liberation of any kind is exactly what these small-minded men can't stand.

Fascist/oligarchic

Study shows increased education on nanotech,
human enhancement increases public concerns

The more we know about scary new technologies, the more we worry. Well, DUH!

BOTH government and corporate honchos will often point to studies like these as justification for KEEPING SECRETS or MISLEADING THE PUBLIC to avoid panic, slow sales, resistance to certain policy changes, or plain old bad PR.

In my opinion (and according to the past history of the world) it's far better for the masses to understand more about new and dangerous tech, rather than less. For caution with such stuff right up front and all along can prevent things like Chernobyl, nuclear war, biological warfare, rising environmental dangers to our health, and unwarranted assaults on our civil liberties.

Based upon our current near-disastrous situation in America, it appears the public knows far too little about not just tech, but the world in general, at this point. Largely due to a catastrophic failure in America's mainstream media, perhaps stemming from changes in the law over past decades which opened the door to a combination fascist/oligarchic media takeover.

Lowered limits

For those living off their credit cards...

By lowering the limit on credit cards, companies can cause consumers to get lower credit scores.

From what I'm hearing from friends it's not just banks that are lowering limits. Retail stores are quietly following suit.

Politely, imbecile

Re All McSame by David M.

Obama: “In fact — as should have been apparent to President Bush and
Sen. McCain — the central front in the war on terror is not Iraq, and it never was”

So please, don't tell me there's no difference between Obama and McCain. There's not as much difference as I'd like, but (let me say this politely) you'd have to be a drooling imbecile to believe these two candidates are "McSame".

Last negotiations with Iran

by The Canadian       Thursday, July 17, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Israel has 'no problem' with US policy shift

Excerpt: Israel reacted cautiously to America's shift in Iran policy Wednesday, saying it had "no problem" with the Bush administration's decision to send a high-level envoy to talks with the Islamic Republic so long as the US demand that Iran suspend uranium enrichment before negotiations begin remained in place.

I believe this is the finale of negotiations with Iran. Depending on the outcome, it will be war or détente. I had heard and read reports of these back room negotiations (Scy Rice's efforts) since May and the rumors became public near the end of June.

The vitriolic messages flying back and forth between Iran and the US/Israel these past few months is typical of prestaging positions during negotiations. "Speak softly but carry a big stick".

Despite this exercise, I would be quite surprised (relieved!) if they did culminate in détente. If I remember correctly, the US conducted such backchannel negotiations with Iraq prior to their decision to go to war.

I've said it before, there are too many fingers on too many triggers, so I remain cautious.

I also think that there will be fighting soon on Israel's Northern Front.

The Canadian
Wow, you're more optimistic than I am — not sure that's happened before. Based on the Bush administration's track record, I'm assuming that they're sending this "high-level envoy" to these talks with a specific assignment to thwart any possibility that peace might break out. These aren't peace talks, they're war talks.
Helen & Harry

Optimistic? Not really, just hoping for some last semblance of sanity. War with Iran will be a bloodbath unlike anything post-WW2 America has ever known.

Keep your eyes on Hez b'Allah on the Northern Border with Israel.

Reno 911

by Scrabbler       Thursday, July 17, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Reno 911 is in, at least, I think, its 5th season. It started on Comedy Central and is being syndicated. The show is about the Reno sheriff department. Mostly a spoof and farce, but almost believable, in a weird way.

The episode "The Wall" rocks me. "Junior" and "Garcia" decide to head to the Mexican border with some other guys to build 1/8th of a mile of border fence as part of Operation "Good Fences Make Good Neighbors".

Lieutenant Dangle aptly points out that this is just a "Burning Man for racist rednecks", and they agree :-)

Anyhoo...Junior and Garcia and their buds spend most of the weekend in the desert drinking beer and firing their guns because it is too hot to work. Then a lunch truck parks just across the border, and the lovely senorita tempts them with free carne asada, which they end up scarfing shamelessly. Then some beaners show up and the guys hire them, "Want to earn $40?". So the day laborers build their fence for them, but when the last fence post is in, the guys find they are on the wrong side of the fence and they have to scramble to get escape across the border into America as the Border Patrol shows up and tries to arrest them (esp. Garcia!!!). One of the guys says he's staying behind in Mexico to be with the lunch wagon girl, who is a fox.

Heheh.

Spaghetti and ice cream

Re All McSame by David M.
Like I wrote to Obama's campaign site, "I don't care if McSame wins, because you're all McSame now."
Horsepuckey. They're as alike as spaghetti and ice cream. Obama is a milquetoast middle of the road moderate. McCain changes positions on everything every fifteen minutes, but has a track record as a reliable neanderthal. That could be the difference between life and death for millions of people, and the difference between lingering freedom and straight-ahead tyranny in America.
