Prez in a bottle

pics here (remarkable pic seen also on olberman's show of bush holding up the american flag --- backwards -- and totally oblivious.)

background on presidential relapses here.

now we know why one should NEVER take shit off the table (better just not discuss extreme scenarios!) ... as in nancy pelosi preemptively halting any discussion of bush impeachment back in 2006 and now saying "he'll be gone in 100 days". Well, 100 days is a long time to have zero leadership...

McCain's bigamy, and answering a rhetorical question

by Herb Ruhs, MD       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

The chief problem of living in a confidence game environment occurs when people start repeating the lies that they have absorbed either explicitly, as in "We have to strike back over 9/11," or implicitly by unconsciously incorporating the assumptions incorporated in the lies, i.e. "National security is best served by having an invincible military."  ... Click for more ...

Sound ruling

by Gertrude Q.       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Judge says UC can deny class credit to Christian school students

Excerpt: A federal judge says the University of California can deny course credit to applicants from Christian high schools whose textbooks declare the Bible infallible and reject evolution.

Rejecting claims of religious discrimination and stifling of free expression, US District Judge James Otero of Los Angeles said UC's review committees cited legitimate reasons for rejecting the texts -- not because they contained religious viewpoints, but because they omitted important topics in science and history and failed to teach critical thinking.

Seems like a sound ruling. It's about academic standards, not religious discrimination.

Smelly elephant

by Chris M.       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Hard times for Hollywood

Excerpt: Another letter is chasing a debt of $88,000 owed by Uri of Miami. The lawyers from New York are making a once-only offer: if he will just put post a cheque for $35,000, the debt will be cleared. This is a 55% discount on the total actually owed. There are other letters for Uri, for other debts running to tens of thousands. One bank is offering to settle for 15 cents on the dollar - a $32,000 debt instantly chopped to barely $5,000. Judging from the letters in the skip, Uri alone owes close to $100,000, yet the people chasing that money seem unable to get him to even open the mail. Multiply Uri by a few million and you begin to understand the seriousness of this meltdown. It is not the kind of story that a generally patriotic American press likes to investigate. But in that one skip, in a small corner of a picture-perfect American city, all the evidence shows repayment claims from banks, car companies, credit-card providers, all turning into so much worthless paper.

The major "economic elephant" in the living room and this one is about to keel over and die. When this happens, it will be very hard to ignore as it will then start to stink.

Memos show Clinton camp lines of attack, disarray

Excerpt: "All of these articles about his boyhood in Indonesia and his life in Hawaii are geared towards showing his background is diverse, multicultural and putting that in a new light. Save it for 2050," Mark Penn, then Clinton's chief strategist, wrote in a March 2007 memo, according to an article to be published in the September edition of THE ATLANTIC magazine.

"It also exposes a very strong weakness for him -- his roots to basic American values and culture are at best limited. I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and in his values," Penn wrote, according to the article by Joshua Green.

This is such a load of bull crap. There is no such thing as "American culture and values" because there is no such thing as "American roots". Except for the Native Americans and (if you really stretch it) those who can still trace their family back to the pilgrims - everyone else is an immigrant. At best 4th generation. I myself am 3rd generation Finn and 4th generation Scott. (Explains much...don't it :-)).

But seriously, this is why attempting to get the citizens of this country to all agree on anything is difficult at best and damn near impossible.

It's also why the predictions of the populace "rising up" as purported by certain progressives, will never happen. We are a collection of loosely coupled ethnic minorities who back our own group first and the country second (when convenient).

Something else new and inconsequential for the media to spend a week obsession over. John Edwards' pecker pattern has nothing to do with anything that matters -- it's INSIDE EDITION material, splayed all over every newspaper and newscast.

Some good news!!

by Marie K.       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

(1) STEM CELLS: Turkish scientists are claiming that they are obtaining cells from adults instead of from baby embryos/fetuses or umbilical cords that can be used as stem cells. Their idea is that since the cells in the area of wisdom teeth remain unspecialized for a long time they are candidates for being used as stem cells. So they have taken cells from the wisdom teeth follicles (cavities) and have turned them into stem cells that have the ability to become any type of specialized cell that is needed for tissue repair. This is also a source of stem cells that is less controversial and also more readily available. Thus, each person could store these cells for later use as they age.

(2) GEORGIA: As of Aug. 12, 2008 the Russians have decided to end their military operations in Georgia. They are also trying to begin discussions with NATO. Russian troops did NOT enter Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia, as was feared. They had entered Gori which is a city close to the South Ossetia area. It has the transportation links that allowed the Georgian troops to gather there. I am assuming that what will happen is that new elections will be called given what is seen as the "miscalculations" made by the current President of Georgia in starting the attacks on South Ossetia.

Georgia is NOT a rich country with a lot of natural resources, and unlike other former Soviet Union countries that gained independence and are doing OK, Georgia isn't. Of course, part of Georgia's problem is that given the US contrived "Rose Revolution" it is now in the clutches of the US, the IMF, the World Bank, and neo-liberal economic policies.

I assume that Russia will push for the ousting the US backed President of Georgia and for new elections in the hope that someone more to their liking will win. There were protests against the current President in Nov. 2007 accusing him of being corrupt and authoritarian. The 2008 elections were brought forward and the current President won amid accusations of vote rigging.

One of the opposition's positions was calling for a foreign policy that was better balanced related to the US and Russia. Maybe Georgian leaders holding such a position is what Russia is hoping to see.

Finally, the President of Turkey has stated that no damage to the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline occurred. This will mean that the situation can return to normal more quickly.

Marie K.

P.S Here is a link to an article http:// www.informationclearinghouse.info/article20490.htm by the current President of Georgia. It offers a description of the recent events pretty different from those I have presented. I will be following the story to discover whether I've gotten things wrong or whether this President is just another of the pathological liars that Bush and the neo-cons specialize in.

Holy hate

by Chris D.       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Love for one another, unending understanding, and divine forgiveness has been a unifying factor in many religions across the globe. Even godless heathen atheists like myself know the simple value of being kind, loving, understanding, and forgiving. We all forget to be one of these things at one time or another, but we are only human. ... Fred Phelps preaches that we should be none of these things under any circumstances.  ... Click for more ...

Neanderthals may live again!

by Amber Perez       Wednesday, August 13, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

This has profound implications for life sciences, and for studies of human intelligence. And, imagine, soon having the complete genome of another intelligent species. In theory a real Neanderthal could be brought to life! That is because right now genetic sequences can be created using machines from computer data, and eventually, in theory, it should be possible to recreate an entire set of chromosomes from computer data. These would then be inserted into a denucleated human egg and the embryo would raised in a vat (or a person!)

Roche's 454 Sequencing System Used to Determine the Complete Neanderthal Mitochondrial Genome, Establishing When Humans and Neanderthals Diverged

Excerpt: The study, entitled "A complete Neanderthal mitochondrial genome sequence determined by high-throughput sequencing" appears today in the journal Cell.

The complete mitochondrial genome sequence was reconstructed from DNA obtained from a 38,000 year old Neanderthal bone fragment excavated in 1980 from the Vindija Cave, Croatia. Analysis of the assembled sequence unequivocally establishes that the Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA falls outside the variation of extant human mtDNAs, showing that Neanderthals did not contribute mtDNA to present-day humans. Furthermore, using the chimpanzee and human mitochondrial DNA sequences as reference points, the number of nucleotide differences found in the Neanderthal mitochondrial DNA establishes the divergence date between human and Neanderthal mtDNAs at 660,000±140,000 years.

Makes me think of Gomer Pyle's description of a standard-issue schlock horror movie, where the plotline usually starts with "scientists messing with things best left alone"...

Neocons now love International Law

Excerpt: Apparently, context is everything. So, the United States attacking Grenada or Nicaragua or Panama or Iraq or Serbia is justified even if the reasons sometimes don't hold water or don't hold up before the United Nations, The Hague or other institutions of international law.

However, when Russia attacks Georgia in a border dispute over Georgia's determination to throttle secession movements in two semi-autonomous regions, everyone must agree that Georgia's sovereignty is sacrosanct and Russia must be condemned.

Neocons also acted this way about states' rights in the US. They repeatedly said the states rather than the federal government should be able to decide lots of issues -- but then turned around the refuted that when states did things like try to legalize marijuana with referendums or legislative changes.

The fear language seems pervasive. You might get sick, "be afraid." You might get sued, "be afraid." You might be killed by terrorists, "be afraid." Global warming is sending a storm your way, "be afraid." I don't want to be afraid, I want to relax and start working toward retirement. Beyond "al Qaeda"'s ability

Russian hackers and botnets attack Georgia's websites

Strikes me as smart wartime strategy. Also seems to be a technical accomplishment that's either beyond "al Qaeda"'s ability, or beyond the Bush administration's ability to pull off and blame anti-amewican tewwowists... It would definitely panic the powers that be, if web-surfers couldn't reach google.com or macys.com or whitehouse.gov.
