I know many of you are aware of the insanity that claimed the life of Tim McLean in a
freak incident on a Greyhound bus. But something just come to my attention recently and
has had me raging mad since it caught my eye. The good folks of Westboro Church, WBC to
some, were planning on making a little trip across the border into Canada to attend the
unfortunate Mr. McLean's funeral so they might spread the message of their Lord.
That message just happens to be "God hates you all, and he's glad you're dead. This is
what you get you damned Canadians, and it's what's going to keep happening as long as you
tolerate
gays!"
Now according to WBC and their leader, Reverend Fred "Fucknuts" Phelps, everyone that is
murdered or dies in accidents and natural disasters across the world is being punished by
God because we don't murder homosexuals in their beds. The church has shown up at many
funerals to dance on the freshly dug graves in the past several years, including those of
members of the gay community, various human rights activists, and also more than a few US
Marines.
What vexes me isn't just the overwhelming ignorance of the group, nor their disrespect for
the dead, not their debased perversion of faith, it isn't their deranged sense of
justification that as long as other people are dying it's God's way of spreading their
hateful message, and it's not even their tendency to get children to hold up signs that
say "Fags die, God laughs." What drives me insane right now is that they can do ALL of
these things. They do all of this with no
Love for one another, unending understanding, and divine forgiveness has been a unifying factor in many religions across the globe.
Even godless heathen atheists like myself know the simple value of being kind, loving, understanding, and forgiving.

fear of reprisal. This group has openly called
for murder, harassed grieving families, cheered for natural disasters, celebrated the
deaths in Afghanistan and Iraq, and has stated that they hope everyone in the military
dies so that God's anti-gay message can be spread. What? You don't believe me? It's on
their filthy site (remember to wash your eyes thoroughly after viewing to prevent infection spreading to your precious brain).
These are the people who are granted freedom of worship while Islam is demonized and even
things that aren't faith-specific like headscarves come under fire. These are the people
granted freedom of speech while rights activists are threatened and accused of slander,
these are the people granted freedom to walk among law-abiding or god-fearing peoples
while war resisters are carted off to prison. While people who make 'leftist' suggestions
such as universal healthcare, government oversight, and unionization are all accused of
hating America, these are the people who have declared it openly. Patriots say through
word and deed, "We love America, and wish to steer her away from the course she's taking."
And are considered pinko traitors. These freakjobs that masquerade as a religion scream at
the top of their lungs, "We hate America and all the liberal bull it stands for, there is
room in Hell for all it's soldiers."
They also hate Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Holland... (long list of
countries in alphabetical order) ...Yugoslavia, and Zimbabwe. They hate all these
countries and hope everyone in them dies. That's not paraphrasing. They openly pray
everyone dies in acts of random violence.
Love for one another, unending understanding, and divine forgiveness has been a unifying
factor in many religions across the globe. Even godless heathen atheists like myself know
the simple value of being kind, loving, understanding, and forgiving. We all forget to be
one of these things at one time or another, but we are only human. We have our free will
and are bound to live and die with the consequences of our choices. We are judged in life
by the impact we have on those around us, and are punished by the rule of law when the
choices we make cause harm to others. For those inclined to believe in the afterlife the
impact of your choices on your soul has no mortal judge, and none can speak for that force
on Earth.
Fred Phelps preaches that we should be none of these things under any circumstances. He
passes judgement over all living things and claims his hate is the will of God. He
intentionally causes undue suffering and praises violence against anyone who isn't moral
by his definition. He's what I would generally call a monster. I judge him a bastard in
life and a danger to the public for his actions, but I cannot say what awaits him upon his
death nor can I pass judgements on the beliefs that drive him to be a menace to society. I
assume that if it exists he's going to a particularly unpleasant part of Hell, but like I
said that's not for me to judge.
As you watch your civil liberties get flushed down the toilet while invisible eyes follow
you everywhere and invisible ears listen to every word you say looking for a hint of
dissent, think of Reverend Fucknuts and wonder why he doesn't have to worry about the fine
dining at Gitmo every time he curses a dead soldier's name or a black van pulling up next
to him on the street filled with men bearing handcuffs and a black bag sized for his head
every time he prays for his own country to burn.

I waver on whether to rant against such loons or merely ignore them. Phelps and his so-called Baptists are obviously out of their minds, but they have no political power beyond their own pathetic church (which is mostly made up of members of Phelps' own family). Yet Phelps gets inordinate coverage all over the mainstream media. Why? Because he serves a very important function -- he makes the legions of nutball right-wingers who DO have political power (start with Cheney and work your way down the very, very long list) look sane by comparison.
Fred Phelps serves that purpose so very, very well, I suspect that's the only reason you or I have ever heard of him.
