Hasta luego, Olivia's deli cheese, "I shall return"

by Herb Ruhs, MD       Wednesday, August 20, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

I am setting off on a three week plus trip in the morning. Usual things. Rescue my girls from various calamities. It is a biannual event featuring new themes. I am packing my iBook so maybe I'll have something for you. Maybe not. If anything really interesting happens I will file dispatches.

Herb Ruhs, MD
You're missed already, but do have a fantabulous time and a safe journey!

The only purpose

by Belching Barney       Wednesday, August 20, 2008         PERMANENT LINK

Rice signs missile defense deal with Poland

Excerpt: Poland and the United States on Wednesday signed a deal to deploy part of a US missile shield on Polish territory in the face of deep Russian anger.

"This will help us to deal with the new threats of the 21st century, of long-range missile threats from countries like Iran or from North Korea," US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said before she signed the accord with Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski.

The signing comes amid heightened tensions between the United States and NATO, and Russia over the conflict with pro-Western Georgia."

I can't see what Russia has to be angry about. Surely the US would be ecstatic if Russia planted ten missiles in Ontario, to defend against the threat of incoming long-range missiles from Zimbawe. And make no mistake, Zimbabwe's long-range missiles are only slightly less imaginary than Iran's or North Korea's. Seriously, the danger of a missile attack from Iran, North Korea, or Zimbabwe cannot be underestimated, and the only purpose this serves is infuriating Russia and keeping the cash flowing to America's military-industrial complex.

Childish

Iran satellite launch a failure: US official

This is so childish. Instead of taunting the failures of Iran's space program, NASA ought to have scientists over there providing expert coaching.

The value of human life has gone to zero

2 NYPD officers accused of assaulting motorist

Excerpt: Two off-duty New York police officers were charged with gang assault after being accused of kicking, punching and pistol-whipping a man whose open car door was blocking their lane of traffic.

God forbid NYC's finest should have their feathers ruffled.

Study finds minorities more likely to be paddled

Excerpt: Paddlings, swats, licks. A quarter of a million schoolchildren got them last year -- and blacks, American Indians and kids with disabilities got a disproportionate share of the punishment, according to a study by a human rights group.

Racism is alive and well in the US. Big surprise?

North Carolina man dies after waiting 22 hours at hospital

New York City agrees to pay protesters $2 million

Excerpt: "The New York Police Department violated core constitutional rights when it arrested a group of peaceful demonstrators who were lawfully protesting against the commencement of the Iraq war and those who stood to profit from it," said Sarah Netburn, a lawyer for the protesters.

New York City is looking more and more like a sh*t hole.

Marshall S.
Two million bucks seems like a lot to me, but New York City has a population of 8,000,000 so that's only about 25¢ per person -- nowhere near enough to make the city stop and think and start reigning in its savage police department.

Re Getting over it by Sherri B.
"Perhaps our great-grandchildren will have much more sense than their elders and learn to live in peace."
Not if they keep dumbing down our kids, and frankly, people in general.

Because we respect peoples' privacy, we do not keep records of friends' and contributors' contact information. This means we can't forward private communications between readers and writers, but we always welcome dialogue for publication.

We're especially interested in hearing and considering different perspectives. All we ask is that you conduct yourself sanely and civilly. For the most productive dialogue, it helps if you'll cite a specific article or concept we've gotten wrong.

When we publish incoming emails, we usually edit out the sender's last name, email address, or anything else that would tend to uniquely identify the author (if we slip up, please let us know). But if your email is unambiguously intended only to annoy, insult, or threaten us, we'll publish all the details, and leave it on-line forever.

Please don't send attachments or other cr*p we don't want.

If you're trying to reach us but getting no reply, it's probably because you've sent us cr*p we don't want, so we're filtering your emails into the trash, unopened and unread.
